Today on Dr. Phil: Dr. Howard Fradkin, malesurvivors.org - concern over media handling of Sandusky
Edited on Fri Nov-18-11 02:05 PM by BrendaBrick
...case:

-snip-

Dr. Howard Fradkin joins Dr. Phil onstage. In his 29-year career as a psychologist, Dr. Fradkin has counseled over 1,000 male sex abuse survivors.

Dr. Fradkin says he’s concerned with the way this scandal is unfolding in the media. He says the first week was focused on the school and the football program. “And it was lost that there were eight victims, and now possibly 18 victims or more,” he says.

Which, case in point on the website...Fradkin's picture is THIRD!!! (AFTER Sandusky & Paterno)

Other information citing the way this is being grossly mishandled:

Psychologists say that any sex abuse victim — man or woman — may find that news of the Penn State case sparks painful memories. But the way this case is unfolding strikes an especially deep chord with men.

“It can be very triggering of either their own memories — they may get flashbacks — or they may get angry again,” said Richard Gartner, a psychologist and psychoanalyst in New York, and spokesman for Malesurvivor.org. Some men may have to limit their news consumption, and maybe avoid watching football to avoid a panic attack or bout of depression, he said.

“It is re-traumatizing for them — more so to the extent that they believe that this is being handled wrong … and ignoring the needs of the victims.”

MaleSurvivor Issues Statement Regarding Jerry Sandusky, Emphasizes Importance of Sexual Abuse Victim Support

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MaleSurvivor, a leading, global not-for-profit organization dedicated to overcoming sexual victimization of boys and men, issued a statement today through Advisory Board Member Dr. Howard Fradkin regarding the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse allegations. The former Penn State coach is currently under investigation for abusing eight boys over a 15-year period.

Dr. Fradkin, who has been treating male sexual abuse victims for nearly three decades, recently appeared alongside Tyler Perry and 200 male survivors on The Oprah Winfrey Show to provide insights into the subject of sexual victimization of boys and men. As one of the founding board members of MaleSurvivor, and someone well versed in the area of sexual abuse particularly with regard to young boys, Dr. Fradkin encouraged the media and the general public to understand the importance of focusing on solutions and recovery for the victims:

“The sexual abuse allegations centered on retired Penn State football Assistant Coach Jerry Sandusky’s actions are horribly familiar to millions of victims of childhood sexual abuse. The majority of media attention has focused on Sandusky and those who knew about Sandusky’s rape of these boys. It is equally important to underscore the harm done to the victims.

I would like to see Olbermann give a *Special Comment* on the way the media is grossly mishandling this and getting their priorities all screwed up by rarely talking about the victims and the devastation that sexual abuse causes!!!!

1. "Confusing sex and rape"
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/opinion/sunday/confusing-sex-and-rape.html

“Why is this described as ‘sexual assault’ and not as ‘rape’ ”? Ms. Crichton wrote.

“My question for The Times,” wrote Frederick Lazare of Houston, “is why did it not immediately tell its readers that the student assistant saw Jerry Sandusky raping a child. That was in the grand jury report.”

Lilith Fowler, a reader from Milwaukee, objected to a Nov. 9 Times account in which the graduate assistant was said to have testified to the grand jury that “he saw Mr. Sandusky having anal sex with the boy.”

The boy, age 10 or 11, has no ability to consent,” Ms. Fowler wrote, “so this is not anal sex, it is a rape, and The Times should call it that.”
