32 workers to be replaced: Golden Gate Bridge going to all-electronic toll system
Golden Gate Bridge going to all-electronic toll system

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The Golden Gate Bridge's toll booths will likely be empty by the end of next year.

The bridge district's board of directors voted 13-2 Friday to replace the span's 32 toll-takers with an all-electronic toll system in September 2012.

The Marin Independent Journal reports the move is aimed at cutting costs as the district seeks to close a $89 million budget deficit.

The change is expected to save about $16 million through the year 2020 in salaries and benefits.

1. It's Going to Be Really Funny
When we're developed to the point where computers can write their own software.

Then, it's karma time. And I won't feel sorry for them.

3. Who will be there to provide directions?
Ever wonder why you have wait for the next person? I have a neighbor who has collected tolls for over 10 years now. I agree, the employee benefits are to envy, and work conditions, well... they suck for the toll takers, so maybe it's a good thing to have good health care benefits.

Still.... I can't think to too good an idea to get away from personnel (while some electronic or exact change booths are left for unattended booths). Lots of the folks coming through toll gates ask questions that are important for their ultimate destination. Some of these questions are useful for marketing purposes in nearby communities, and let's face it, it's gonna make some of these lines longer due TO the technology or generalized fuck up TO the technology.

I'll be watching this one with interest.
