Cancellation of Bush's visit to Switzerland for fear of legal prosecution on charges of torture

Human rights groups make claims of torture against Bush in Switzerland
Rights groups said Saturday that former U.S. President George W. Bush canceled a trip to Switzerland, where he was scheduled to deliver a speech at a charity event a Jew, given the seriousness of the legal proceedings that may be taken against him in the allegations of torture.

It was scheduled to be Bush's keynote speaker at the annual dinner of the Foundation Keren Hayesod in Geneva on February 12, but there are human rights pressure on the Swiss government to arrest him, and opened a criminal investigation if the country's income.

Court officials said that the criminal complaints against Bush in the torture allegations submitted to the court in Geneva.

And human rights groups said it plans to submit a claim from the 2500 pages against Bush in the Swiss city on Monday, alleging ill-treatment of suspected militants at Guantanamo detainees, which includes Afghanistan, Iraq and other fronts in so-called war on terrorism.

The Battle for Lazoughli Square

On Saturday 29 January, protesters in Tahrir tried to march on the Interior Ministry’s compound in Lazoughli Square, which hosts one of Mubarak’s biggest torture centers, State Security Police headquarters.

Although the police has withdrawn from all the streets on the previous night, following their defeat, their forces gathered to protect Lazoughli, and snipers were stationed around the ministry’s buildings. The police kept firing continuous rounds of tear gas, live ammunition, rubber bullets, birdshots. I don’t know how many died. I saw at least one. Many were injured.

The army did not protect the protesters. After hours of clashes, the tanks moved into Mohamed Mahmoud Street, to try separate between the revolutionaries and the police troops. The revolutionaries took the tanks as a shield and kept trying to storm the compound. People also used blankets, cardboards, anything they can shield themselves with in the face of the bullets.

Unfortunately, the compound could not be stormed on that day. One day we will.

Matthew Cassel is tweeter Justimage, no secret, I'd never endanger these brave reporters

Protesters stand in front of grafitti calling on the US government to stay out of Egypt's affairs, 2 February. (Matthew Cassel)

The greatest danger to the Egyptian revolution and the prospects for a free and independent Egypt emanates not from the "baltagiyya" -- the mercenaries and thugs the regime sent to beat, stone, stab, shoot and kill protestors in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities last week -- but from Washington.

Ever since the Egyptian uprising began on 25 January, the United States government and the Washington establishment that rationalizes its policies have been scared to death of "losing Egypt." What they fear losing is a regime that has consistently ignored the rights and well-being of its people in order to plunder the country and enrich the few who control it, and that has done America's bidding, especially supporting Israel in its oppression and wars against the Palestinians and other Arabs.

The Obama Administration quickly dissociated itself from its envoy to Egypt, Frank Wisner, after the latter candidly told the BBC on 5 February that he thought President Hosni Mubarak "must stay in office in order to steer" any transition to a post-Mubarak order ("US special envoy: 'Mubarak must stay for now'," 5 February 2011).

...

As The New York Times -- always a reliable barometer of official thinking -- reported, "The United States and leading European nations on Saturday threw their weight behind Egypt's vice president, Omar Suleiman, backing his attempt to defuse a popular uprising without immediately removing President Hosni Mubarak from power." Obama administration officials, the newspaper added, "said Mr. Suleiman had promised them an 'orderly transition' that would include constitutional reform and outreach to opposition groups" ("West Backs Gradual Egyptian Transition," 5 February 2011).
