Egyptian anti-government protesters sleep on the tires of a military tank stationed on Tahrir (Liberation) Square,
which for the past two weeks has been the center of a sit-in protest by thousands of Egyptians demanding the government step down from power.
Protesters created a human shield and barricades to fend off pro-Mubarak supporters from getting into the square
and to prevent the military from an overnight attack to clear the square from the protesters.

Arrested: Al-Masry Al-Youm’s Day of Anger reporters’ diary

Ali Abdel Mohsen

It’s slightly embarrassing that, after several days of successfully navigating my way through the chaos of teargas explosions, rock missiles, undercover officers, and stampeding crowds, I ended up getting arrested as I was walking into a five-star hotel on 28 January.

Our offices had temporarily relocated due to the country’s severely restricted internet access, and I was standing at the hotel entrance with a colleague when I felt a heavy hand land on my shoulder, grip tight, and pull me backward. “You. Come with me,” said the officer, a wolf-faced young man in a tight leather jacket.

I asked him what this was about, and if there was something I could help him with, and he replied angrily, “This is for what you’re doing to the country, you son of a bitch.” I told him that he was making a big assumption considering he didn’t know me, but he rattled my arm and advised me to shut up if I didn’t want to get on his “bad side.”

He led me across the street to a tourist police booth that had been taken over by a gang of state security officers. They were crowded around an older man, a human rights activist who I had met and interviewed at a previous protest. The activist had also gotten arrested, and was about to be escorted away by two officers in a cab--the back windows were smashed in--but he absolutely refused to leave while I was still in custody.

Egyptian VP holds firm, says only alternative to dialogue is 'coup'

Staff
Tue, 08/02/2011 - 18:11

Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman has said that the only alternative to dialogue as a means of resolving the ongoing political crisis was a 'coup,' reiterating that the regime would not step down.

...

Suleiman considered the word “departure,” which has been repeated by protesters in reference to the sought-after departure of embattled President Hosni Mubarak, as being contrary to the ethics of the Egyptians, who have always shown respect for their ruler.

“It's not only insulting to the president," he said, "but to the Egyptian people as well."

He stressed that Mubarak was one of the heroes of Egypt's 1973 October War with Israel, and that the military establishment could not forget its glorious history. He also said those supporting calls for civil disobedience constituted a "grave threat to society."

"We cannot afford to wait any longer,” he said. “We must put an end to this crisis as soon as possible."

The protesters won't allow US Naval ships through the Suez Canal to kill their brothers in sisters in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan... And worse, demand an end to the Gaza siege. US media is very cute pretending it's just about Mubarak getting on a plane and it ends there.

Regime Releases Rallying Symbol
Authorities Let Google Executive Go As State Moves to Bolster Its Standing

By NOUR MALAS, MARGARET COKER and TAMER EL-GHOBASHY

CAIRO—Egyptian authorities, under opposition pressure, released the Google Inc. executive whose disappearance during demonstrations over a week ago made him one of the rallying symbols of the protest movement.

The executive, Wael Ghonim, said in a television interview afterward that he had been held by state security services, blindfolded throughout his detention, and that he wasn't mistreated.

As the popular uprising entered its third week, organizers called for another day of mass protest for Tuesday, and there was no sign of progress in narrowing the gap between the regime and demonstrators who insist President Hosni Mubarak must step down.

Mr. Mubarak went publicly about government business Monday, meeting with his new cabinet for the first time, with the vice president, the speaker of parliament and the head of the appeals court.

A Movie Star Appears in Cairo’s Tahrir Square

Tahrir Square has star power. Just check out the videos posted all around the web of Egyptian film and television star Amr Waked.

Waked, who has also appeared in the American film “Syriana,” added to the festival-like atmosphere of the square on Sunday, the 13th day of massive protests since the uprising began.

As Waked strolled in the square, a massive crowd surrounded him to shake hands and give him hugs.

He was there in the dark days, too, earning the respect of the anti-regime protesters after he spent several days at Tahrir joining in the activism. One fan said Waked was in the square Wednesday, when supporters of the regime charged protesters on horses and camels, just one bizarre scene in a day of brutal fighting.

French PM: My Egypt-paid holiday

FRENCH PM Francois Fillon admitted President Mubarak paid for his family's NY holiday and lent them a plane.

Questionable politics: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (R) meeting with French Prime Minister Francois Fillon back in 2008. Fillon has admitted to a Mubarak funded trip to Egypt. Picture: Cris Bouroncle Source: AFP

The revelation came as France's foreign minister battled calls for her resignation over a New Year holiday in Tunisia during which she used a private jet owned by a tycoon allegedly close to the country's ousted dictator.

Fillon's office rushed out a statement after the satirical weekly Le Canard Enchaine broke the story about his trip to Egypt, where 300 people have been killed in massive protests seeking to oust Mubarak.

The Fillon family got a free holiday that lasted from December 26 to January 2 in the Nile resort of Aswan, were treated to a Nile boat ride and a flight on an Egyptian government plane to go sight-seeing, it said.

"The prime minister was lodged during this visit by the Egyptian authorities," the statement said, noting that Fillon met Mubarak in Aswan on December 30, before anti-government protests kicked off in Egypt.

...

Fillon has in recent days repeatedly backed his foreign minister Michele Alliot-Marie as she faced calls to step down over her alleged links with the ousted Tunisian strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
