First lady says president has kicked smoking habit
By Mimi Hall, USA TODAY

President Obama has finally kicked the habit. First lady Michelle Obama says her husband hasn't had a puff of a cigarette in about a year, and she is proud of him for conquering his bad habit.

She said she never pestered him about quitting because she knew it was "a personal challenge for him." She also hasn't talked to him much about his decision to lay off the butts. "When somebody's doing the right thing, you don't mess with them," she joked. What made him finally stop? Daughters Malia and Sasha are getting to the age, she said, where her husband wants to be able to look them in the eye and say he doesn't smoke.

In a wide-ranging interview with a dozen reporters over lunch in the Old Family Dining Room at the White House, the first lady discussed her national Let's Move! campaign to end childhood obesity in a generation. She said the year-old campaign will be expanded over the next couple of years, starting with new public service announcements she will unveil tomorrow that will potentially reach 200 million viewers.

The first lady also: Would not state a position on gay marriage. "I'm not getting into that."

7. I haven't smoked in over 25 years and I know I'll never say I've "kicked the habit". . .
Of all the vices and addictions I've worked to conquer over the past 40 years, smoking is far and away the hardest to quit. After all these years, I still find myself catching a whiff of someone's smoke and feeling a tug to indulge.

Good luck to President Obama and everyone else trying to "snuff those butts," but the First Lady speaks as someone who's never smoked.

8. I agree.....
after 25 years quit myself....I know at all times I'm just one puff away from being right back at it.
Those buggers are that addicting...I sometimes get the tug when stressed...but know they are poison.

9. I quit years ago and I never bug my still-smoking relatives about their habit...
They know it's bad for them. When they're ready...they'll quit. I believe that.

I love Michelle Obama.

10. I'm proud of him. Quitting smoking is the hardest thing I have ever done.
I admire anyone who can do it--or even try.

11. Nicotine is the best
drug I have ever encountered.
I am 2 years done in April.
However, if I knew I could smoke without the severe health consequences I would be smoking this very instant.
I think Johnny Depp said he wished he had 2 mouths so that he could smoke more than 1 cigarette at a time.
Nicotine really is that good.
