CHICAGO - Bishop James Arends of La Crosse has joined five other Wisconsin bishops of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America urging Wisconsin lawmakers to respect workers' rights.
The bishops, who represent 809 ELCA congregations with 468,000 members in the state, sent a letter to Gov. Scott Walker and members of the Legislature saying they are praying for the lawmakers as they deal with difficult state budget issues.
The bishops also called on the officials to pay particular attention to people who may be vulnerable if certain state programs are eliminated or reduced.
The bishops called for the rights of all people "to be respected with dignity and opportunity for fair and equal exchanges."
