DYI Build Your Own Fusion Reactor
Edited on Mon Mar-14-11 08:42 AM by Lastactiongyro

Yes, you can build your very own nuclear fusion reactor in your house! But first, a few warnings:

-This project includes lethal voltage levels. Make sure you know your high voltage safety or have a qualified electrical advisor.
-Potentially hazardous levels of x-rays will be produced. Lead shielding of viewports is a must!
-Deuterium, an explosive gas, will be used. Make sure to check for fuel leaks.
-All the other inherent dangers of a home engineering project of this degree (a wide gamut of potential injuries, damage to the checking account, and the loss of general sanity)

4. Actually, the tragedy unfolding in Japan underscores the need for a working fusion reactor design.
No fusion reactor currently built or under construction has ever achieved unity- power generation that is equivalent to power expenditure. We know fusion works- the results of a huge and continuous fusion reaction silently crash down upon our little blue marble every second of every day, by way of the sun- but we don't know how to do it here on Earth.

The benefits of fusion power would be enormous. A working fusion reactor- one that reaches beyond the point of unity to actual power generation- would spell the end of the oil era. No more would we be bound to dirty methods such as coal, oil, and natural gas; fusion power would result in abundant, nearly free energy (and, unlike the false promise of nuclear fusion power, this would be the real deal). The use of petroleum products would be relegated to their proper applications, such as for lubrication of machine parts, plastics production, and some industrial applications; depending upon the method finally used in the first working fusion reactor, the waste would be manageable and far, far less serious a problem than that of nuclear fission.

Fusion reactor development may be the one, small silver lining here. Clearly, we need a better way of meeting our energy needs. Coal, oil, natural gas, and especially nuclear fission power are too dirty; "clean" methods such as wind, solar, hydrothermal, and wave generators are just far too inefficient to meet our ever-growing energy requirements. Fusion power will meet our needs, but we need to figure out how to do it first, and that will take lots and lots of money.

It's pretty clear at this point that that would be money well-spent.

3. Thanks. I'll rush out and buy the parts. This solar system needs a second star.
Warm things up a bit.
