Iowa has no money to pay its court appointed attorneys now.
Budget stalemate here is impacting services in the state in surprising ways.

Marshalltown lawyer Jennifer Steffens says the Iowa Legislature's budget gridlock and resulting delayed payment for her work is forcing her to lay off a legal secretary today.

Steffens also has put her house up for sale a bit earlier than she had planned, partly because of her financial uncertainty.

Attorneys for indigent defendants say they're being held hostage by a budget dispute between House Republicans and Senate Democrats.

The standoff is also costing state taxpayers additional money in interest costs.....more

...so what do they need defense lawyers for? Just more socialism.
