Indiana GOP Rep Says Women Will Pretend To Be Raped To Get Free Abortions
Edited on Thu Mar-31-11 08:23 AM by tpsbmam
Yesterday morning, the Indiana House considered an anti-abortion bill that “would put some of the tightest abortion restrictions in the nation into Indiana law.” Introduced by state Rep. Eric Turner (R), HB 1210 would make most abortions illegal after 20 weeks. Current law restricts abortions after the fetus is viable, generally around 24 weeks.

In an attempt to soften the blow this bill would land on Hoosier women, state Rep. Gail Riecken (D) introduced an amendment to exempt “women who became pregnant due to rape or incest, or women for whom pregnancy threatens their life or could cause serious and irreversible physical harm” from being forced to carry to term. Fearing this bill would “push women to the back alleys” for illegal abortions, Riecken pleaded with lawmakers to allow women to make the choice in these cases.

TURNER: With all do respect to Rep. Riecken, I understand what she’s trying to do. But as you know that when the federal health care bill was going through Congress there was a lot of discussion whether this would allow for abortion coverage and of course we were all told it would not. And the bill, my house bill 1210, would prevent that for any insurance company to provide abortion coverage under federal health care bill. This would open that window and I would ask you to oppose this amendment.

I just want you to think about this, in my view, giant loophole that could be created where someone who could — now i want to be careful, I don’t want to disparage in any way someone who has gone through the experience of a rape or incest — but someone who is desirous of an abortion could simply say that they’ve been raped or there’s incest.

More at Think Progress.

(Oops -- forgot to add emphasis was in the TP original.)

3. Someone who is desirous of an abortion would more likely turn to a back alley abortion
or a coat hanger. At least that is what poor women did the last time big government put a no trespassing sign on women's wombs.

Yes, way back in the late '70s I called men pigs, and then they seemed to have learned to watch
their language. Now it's out in the open again.

15. I'm finding a whole lot of things are out in the open again...
and it smacks of the assumption that they have a receptive audience. In the teabaggers, hate groups and way too many in the conservative mainstream, they do have the audience. As this misogynist crap is flowing more freely, so too are incredibly racist remarks/depictions. I can't think of a time when these types didn't show their bigotry toward GLBT but I agree, what had become unacceptable over the last 4 or so decades is now flowing more freely. Putrid people.

:puke:

When the johns who were trolling for the ladies that worked 'the corner' a few blocks away started coming into surrounding neighborhoods and bothering the teenaged girls that lived in family homes, people wanted the ladies rounded up more often. Gail pointed out that it wasn't the ladies that were the problem - it was the men, some of which were in very nice cars.

She organized a campaign where the license #s of cars bothering girls in areas that were not "the corner" were reported to the police, and the police would send a postcard to the home of the owner of the vehicle stating that if they were reported harrasing women in that part of town again, they would be called in for questioning.

That solved the problem within a month.

As to GOP obsession with forced childbirth - the whole right wing idea is that unwanted pregnancy is supposed to expose 'illicit' sex, so forcing them to have these babies is keeping them honest. To them, any woman that does not want to have a baby is clearly hiding something.

12. All this concern about cheating...once again a matter of projection
of an individuals beliefs onto the entire population?

Who would think like this other than someone who spends a lot of time thinking about how to cheat?

14. Beyoind being creepy and disgusting, this is idiotic
The woman could not just say "rape" or - even more unlikely - "incest". Consider incest - the woman KNOWS the family member - so this is an extremely serious, horrendous charge against an innocent person (per the assumption that it is a lie). It ruins that person's life and likely that of the whole family.

With rape, the same is true unless she claims it was someone she did not know and which I think will still be investigated - even if she does not want to press charges.

21. Even if that were true, why the fuck should he care?
Why is it he cares SOOOOOO much about what a woman, ANY woman, does with her own body?

And why does he feel that he can now LIE about it in order to further his agenda?

And why aren't Dems calling him out on his outrageous lies?
