Cell Phone Surveillance: Some Cell Phones Record Your Location Hundreds Of Times A Day
http://endoftheamericandream.com/archives/cell-phone-surveillance-some-cell-phones-record-your-location-hundreds-of-times-a-day

Do you own a cell phone? Do you think that it is private and secure? You might want to think again. The truth is that there is virtually no privacy when it comes to cell phones. In fact, the amount of cell phone surveillance that goes on is absolutely staggering. For example, one German politician named Malte Spitz recently went to court to force Deutsche Telekom to reveal how often his cell phone was being tracked. What he found out was absolutely amazing. It turns out that in just one 6 month period, Deutsche Telekom recorded the longitude and latitude coordinates of his cell phone 35,000 times. Not only that, in the United States cell phone companies are actually required by law to be able to pinpoint the locations of their customers to within 100 meters. Most cell phone carriers are able to track their customers far more accurately than that. The truth is that your location will never again be truly "private" as long as you are carrying a cell phone.

And your conversations will not be private either. A whole host of people could be listening in on your cell phone calls. In fact, your cell phone can be used to spy on you even when you don't have it on. For example, as one CNET News article noted, if law enforcement authorities are investigating you they can remotely activate the microphone on your cell phone and listen in on your conversations....

The FBI appears to have begun using a novel form of electronic surveillance in criminal investigations: remotely activating a mobile phone's microphone and using it to eavesdrop on nearby conversations.

The technique is called a "roving bug," and was approved by top U.S. Department of Justice officials for use against members of a New York organized crime family who were wary of conventional surveillance techniques such as tailing a suspect or wiretapping him.

5. Next, speeding tickets delivered to your mailbox...
because they will now be able to track you.
And we all know speeders must be terrorists!

Special thanks to those that voted (or refused to vote) to extend the Patriot Act!

6. And yet they are "powerless" to stop anything useful
In spite of all this data, they seem unable to convict anyone of banking fraud for example.

My wife works for a company that would require this and I can tell you the OP is full of shit.

CAN a cell track you?..of course.DO THEY track EVERYONE ?..of course not.

I LIKE the idea that if I ever get hurt while in the woods I can turn on my gps and call my wife and they can find me.Is there a law that EVERY Cell Phone in the country be tracked 24/7? Of course not

On edit:

At my wifes company 6 people busted into President Obama"s blackberry..the one who did the cracking is still in prison...the 5 who watched all got fired

9. Put your cellphone next to a computer and you can hear when it happens.
Frankly, since they're getting freebie GPS on us, they should also use the same system to help us find our cellphones when we lose them.

10. This is not news
and investigators have been doing the activated microphone thing for years.

Using GPS positions to cite you for speeding is not yet possible and is unlikely as several attempts to overturn speeding citations using that data have failed. In one case I recall the father had fitted vehicle tracking to his son's vehicle to stop him speeding. The police cited the son and the tracker showed the boy had not been speeding but the judge upheld the conviction because GPS data was not, he said, accurate enough.

Police like the "freedom" of being able to pull people over on a (false) pretext. Stop light damage, speeding (you were doing 32 mph in a 30 zone) the ever popular "driving erratically" and tyre inspection are all used. All to often they are excuses for the real crimes of "driving whilst young," "driving whilst brown," and the ever popular "you're young, dark skinned, from out of town and driving a better car than me."
