The U.S. military's departure from Iraq is "incredibly complex," Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick said Friday in a video teleconference from the war-torn country.

Helmick is overseeing day-to-day operations in Iraq as the U.S. military hands over tasks to the U.S. State Department and the Iraqi government during the next nine months to meet a Dec. 31 withdrawal deadline.

"It's going to be one heck of a challenge," Helmick told reporters at Fort Bragg during the teleconference from Camp Victory.

Helmick, commander of Fort Bragg and the 18th Airborne Corps, is serving as deputy commanding general for operations of U.S. Forces-Iraq.

"Dec. 31 is not an end point. It's a transition point," Helmick said.
