Dear Skinner, EarlG and Elad
As you know, it starts today, so make sure your prescriptions for chill pills are up to date and maybe you might want to take this short opportunity before DU flushes itself violently down the toilet, to take a vacation. Go somewhere pretty and take lots of pictures and hopefully they will sustain you. I predict this is going to be the most acrimony you've yet seen on this website and I know you've seen awful things here during primaries. And heck, half of the rage will be about the fact that so many of us feel alienated by the supposed Democratic President but know that we will see batshit crazy up close and personal if we don't hold our nose. Some of us will be hoping that Howard Dean decides to get in and poach all the youngins who get left at the Obama altar.

At least, get chocolate, lots of chocolate.

1. Do you mean that more astroturfers will show up?
We have enough astroturf now to cover several football fields.

2. Some of that but there's a barely kept boiling cauldron of fury about
being duped by this guy. He said one thing, albeit vague and has governed completely differently. This is the time of reckoning and it isn't going to be all that much fun.

42. Or empathetic with the plight of the owners, I guess?
This thread has been hijacked and forcefully turned to other people's agena. Maybe I should consider not writing an op just before I go to bed since we're already going into that strident time known as the Primary wars. I've been through two here and I know each left their scars on many of us but especially the owners.

You see I think a percentage of that "fury" is really bright red astroturf and some of it is even puke green.

8. Perhaps
but that percentage is likely extremely small.

You can dismiss it as astroturf, or opposition-gaming, but that doesn't explain why so few Democrats showed up at the polls in 2010.

There was only so long that George Bush's policies could be pursued under a Democratic President before people were going to figure it out, and this Libya thing is an air horn to the ear for those who previously didn't get the memo.

18. Regardless
What then, if not disaffected 2008 Obama voters (Democrats and independents) deciding not to show up at the polls, is the explanation for the poor showing in 2010?

32. That's an extraordinarily weak argument
Midterms are usually considered to be referendums on the President's performance, hence 2006 signaling that the country was ready for a change from Bush policies... an order that still has not been fulfilled.

35. historically, midterm elections always have far smaller turnouts. you can believe it's because all
True Dems(tm) can't stand obama if it gets you up in the morning. you won't be supported by any facts, but knock yourself out.

36. My my how we dance around the issue
Smaller turnout in general does not equal smaller turnout for one side in particular.

How many times will you deflect before you confront the question, why was turnout for Democrats as a proportion of the total vote so much lower in 2010 than it was in 2006, which was also a midterm election?

You folks who refuse to even acknowledge this question, let alone answer it, are driving our party directly towards a cliff for 2012. When that time comes and we lose as badly in 2012 as we won strongly in 2008, you will pretend that nobody ever told you that maybe there were other things going on you should be paying attention to, but this post and many others of mine and other posters here will stand as a testament that you were told there was a problem in the party that needed to be solved and deliberately chose to ignore it.

Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 09:09 AM by Motown_Johnny
This video should prove that your premise is false, therefore your conclusions are wrong. Please adjust them accordingly.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/

If we assume that Dr. Maddow's assertion that President Obama has achieved ~85% of what he set out to do in his first term (in the first half of that term) is true, then your statement that he has "governed completely differently" is incorrect.

I could also link to a more recent segment where she compares his Nobel Prize acceptance speech with what he has done in Libya. It provides evidence that he is doing exactly what he said he would do.

You have every right to disagree with what he is doing but claiming that he isn't doing what he said he would do is simply wrong.

about "Disrespectful nicknames, crude insults, or right-wing smears against Democrats." and "Expressing intent to not vote or vote third party, or justifying defeat of any Democratic general election candidate (unless a non-Democrat is most likely to defeat the conservative alternative)." are strictly enforced.

39. Assumptions aren't always correct
I'm a night shifter. I went to bed to sleep and still would be if my family hadn't left the pooch outside when they left for work. Now he's happily gnawing on his favorite bone at the end of my bed. And stupidly, I decided to check DU and have gotten to see my commiseration to the owners thread turned into an evil screed worthy of getting tombstones. Either my writing is really that bad or people are reading a lot into what I said.

Anyway, once my sleeping pill is inboard, I am going to once again abandon this thread for a much more needed thing - sleep
