Food Recall: Jennie-O Turkey Burgers (drug resistant salmonella)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42425976/ns/health-food_safety/

Government health officials are warning that salmonella bacteria detected in an outbreak of food poisoning from popular turkey burgers may be resistant to common drugs used to fight serious infection.

At least a dozen people in 10 states have been sickened by raw, frozen turkey burger products produced by the Jennie-O Turkey Store in Willmar, Minn. The firm recalled nearly 55,000 pounds of the meat last week after illnesses were reported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Late Monday, CDC officials announced that the strain of Samonella Hadar found in the meat appear to be resistant to several common antibiotics, including ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, cephalothin and tetracycline.

The recall includes 4-pound boxes of Jennie-O Turkey Store All Natural Turkey Burgers with seasonings Lean White Meat. Each box contains 12 1/3-pound individually wrapped burgers. The boxes are marked with a use-by date of Dec. 23, 2011 and a lot code of 32710 through 32780. Establishment number P-7760 is located within a USDA mark of inspection on the front of each box.

1. In addition to the fecal form bacteria?
Every ounce of prepackaged ground meat (foul, swine or bovine) you consume (restaurants, fast food or grocery) has just a little bit of shit in it.

Pass.

6. Rinse until the cows come home..
and you will not rinse away salmonella. Vegetable salmonella poisoning is every bit as dangerous and common as meat borne salmonella...the difference is most meat salmonella is cooked to death (165 degrees F), raw vegetable salmonella isn't cooked at all.

4. 27 tons recalled.
My god. How many birds is that?

I had to look this up earlier because my dad bought some and wanted to know if they were safe. The latest article contained anti-veggie burger panic. Beginning, middle and end.

You may be tempted to switch to veggie burgers, but....veggie burgers may contain eggs, so you're not safe eating them, either. So there! :eyes:

7. You're safe eating any of them if they are carefully cooked to 165 degrees..

5. It's a good thing these burgers didn't fall into the hands of terrorists

Because the terrorists would have probably figured out a way to get these things into our food supply.

8. Careless Cooking Leads To Illness
should be the headline. Every kitchen should have a good NSF rated digital probe thermometer. Any bought ground meats should be cooked to 165 degrees internal temperature..no chance of salmonella if this is done. People who will eat raw or rare commercially packaged ground meats will be sickened sooner or later.

10. +1
adding NSF rated digital probe thermometer to my shopping list

(I have an immune-compromised family member in the house; I should have been using one of these thermometers all along)

11. I am a restaurant
manager/chef and also a kitchen manager/chef at a nursing home. Immune compromised, as you know, are at highest risk. !00% safe may not be possible, most risk can be eliminated or reduced by relatively simple safer cooking and handling processes.
