While it frustrated me when we gave up so much in the Health Care fight even though we were on the politically winning side of most of the details, I at least could concede that there were things that we "got" even as there were things we had to give to the Republicans/business, etc. So when it was done Democrats could point to stuff that we wanted that we would not have gotten if we didn't compromise or give in to Republican demands.
With the tax/stimulus deal it was the same thing. It infuriated me that we extended the tax cuts for the wealthy but at least as reprehensible as that was and as bitter a pill to swallow there were things that we got that we would not have if we didn't give in to the GOP demands.
But on this budget debate....I can't see anything that we get by giving in. I'm not saying we are giving in, and I see more signs of digging in this time than I did on those previous 2 issues. But if we do I can't see where as Democrats gain anything that we would not get if we didn't give in. If we don't give in we get a shut down and the Republicans lose just as much as we do, if not more if the polling is to be believed. Yes, our staffers go unpaid but so do theirs. Both sides lose equally on that front. So it's really just the political optics and by all accounts we would win that in the event of a shut down.
So I guess I'm trying not to phrase this in an confrontational way, but as much as I disagreed with the "Democrats had no choice but to cave!!!" arguments on the previous 2 issues, there was no doubt that there were definite points to be made for having done what they did. A typical case of I can disagree with whether or not we should have taken the gamble and pushed for more, but there's no doubt that when the deals were done we did receive things that "our side wanted".
Is there a case to be made here for a hypothetical cave on this budget issue?
