Reason #2,548,991 why a government shutdown is bad politics for the GOP...Two Words:
Tax Refunds.

Yup.

If they shut it down at midnight on Friday, the IRS will cease processing returns until the lights come back on.

If you're waiting for a check (like I am), you will be...what's that word again?

Oh, right.

Screwed.

Pass it on.

7. HA! Perhaps I should check the SS site. I honestly don't know but
had figured when they say "shutdown" that was included..

9. The episode "Shutdown" of The West Wing
addressed this issue. The SS checks weren't going out, which caused a lot of White House angst, until Donna figured out a way to fix it.

Worst possible reference for an accurate answer to the question, but the West Wing writers seemed to think the SS checks would not go out in a shutdown.

So there's that.

So I guess they must have somehow lost my return in the chaos of the shutdown.

8. I usually wait til the last day to file even though I always get money back...
just like the money coming in closer to my birthday (5/14) so I can use the refund as part of it.

As soon as it dawned on my there would be a government shut-down I got that puppy done and completed. I'm suppose to get my federal refund tomorrow. I'm holding my breath.

11. Now
How do we make that the narrative? I'm in total agreement, but I have a feeling that if say - Nancy Pelosi makes this point . . . the party Leadership will apologize to Boehner/Ryan and say she was misguided. Know what I mean? Basically - we suck at messaging so by the time 2012 runs around it will be Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid starved your grandmother in April of last year.

15. No, that word is PISSED. And that's why it's important politically.
(As opposed to personally when you don't get your money.)

17. If I remember, there were actually 2 shutdowns in
the 1990s, both within a couple weeks of each other. I was still working for social security then and I remember the checks still going out. The first one, we were all sent home but received our regular paychecks anyway on time. The second time we were declared essential and made to work but we were not paid. This dampened the enthusiasm of the employees somewhat. Eventually we were paid however. It was a total fuck-up.

23. my friends from Germany were in the USA and had to climb the gate at Bryce Nat'l Park
with snow shoes on.

their trip was all messed up because they couldn't get into any National Parks, Monuments (all gated and locked) --or at least not far into them, as well as all Federal Facilities.

i'm sure any international visitor who's been planning a USA trip is waiting it out until this resolves, many visit the Smithsonian, monuments, parks, sites in New York City. if i were them and planning a trip, i'd have postponed it.

great for the economy!

19. I just think this entire
'Government Shutdown' is one big CIRCUS....As the radiation from Japan is now on its second circling of our Planet Earth, all we get is a picture of a dog rescued from a floating rooftop.

From what I've read, the Midwest is most susceptible to the fallout....and with recent downpours, I wonder just how much fallout we have been smothered with.

And yeah, the Midwest supplies lots of food.

We're SCREWED alright.
