Head scarf angers Orland mall shopper

A Joliet woman has been charged with disorderly conduct after harassing a woman wearing a head scarf at Orland Square Mall, Orland Park police said.

Luana Merle, 51, began insulting the ethnicity of another shopper in the JC Penney store on March 24, calling the woman a terrorist and telling her to “go back to her own country,” according to police.

I was at that store that very day, I really wished I had seen this happening because I would have stepped in and stopped it. This is also not to far from the Jewel Osco where the women pulled the muslim womens scarf off a few years ago, which I was near as well working two stores down at the time. I never relized their where so many crazy people around me.

After 911, I was part of a Denver contingent that made ourselves available to area Muslims--especially women-- to escort them or to come if needed, should they encounter problems. After a few months, we got less and less requests for escorts and pretty much ceased. Ironically, I've heard that some of the original group have discussed whether they need to reorganize-- to address an escalation in anti-Muslim attitudes the past year or so-- particularly after the (manufactured) NYC mosque controversy. And, I think Denver is generally tolerant compared to some cities.

I should not be surprised, but this depresses me.
