According to the news today, Donald Trump is doing very well in his ridiculously fake presidential run. Oh, sorry...the polls didn't say it was ridiculously fake, I added that.
So, what's the deal, we're all asking. How can anyone be taking him seriously? Here's the rub, which may work out quite well for the Democrats: Trump is polling well based purely upon his celebrity. It's the American way. He has a popular TV show, he's a businessman, he's fun to watch (if you like watching big-hair train wrecks), he's everything bad about the American pop-culture/Frankenstein monster. People don't know Tim Pawlenty, people DO know Sarah Palin, people are thoroughly baffled by Michele Bachmann...but everyone knows The Donald. He's an icon, love him or hate him. So of course, he's going to poll better than the rest of the current GOP freak show.
Now, here's why this is good news for Democrats; the GOP, in its incredible ineptness when it comes to reading the wishes of the American Public, will look upon Donald's polling as support for "Birtherism." After all, Trump has been the most vocal Birther out there, putting the average shameless Tea Bagger to shame. The GOP will misread this as evidence that people SUPPORT the "Birther" position, and they'll quietly jump on board whenever necessary. They'll ignore Trump's celebrity as a reason for his positive polling, and instead they focus on his crazy Birther rants on morning teevee shows.
And they'll do it to their own peril. I think Donald Trump's recent morning news appearances are wonderful comedy routines. Face it, the man has no intention of opening his books and filing the necessary disclosures required to run for president. But he's gonna play the game FOR HIS OWN SAKE. That's what he does. The GOP will misread and go along...and they'll follow each other off the cliff. Personally, I look forward to it.
