Now the other two are feeding, but it looks like it's gone to sleep while the other two are being fed.

4. That's what I thought, too. ^_^ I don't know anything about birds, and I wondered if it was
still feeding on the yolk sak.

It is getting intimidated by the other two, and will probably be laying low a lot. :(

8. It probably won't make it
They are very competitive about food.

It's very, very rare for three eaglets to survive.

If food is scarce usually the only one survives - the first one grabs it all and then attacks the other and kills it.

9. If you have been watching this stream, the food definitely isn't scarce!
The last two fledges of this pair have had 3 eaglets survive.

The outcome of this batch remains to be seen.

24. I've been watching them too. I read the other day that
it's not unusual when there are 3 chicks that the eldest will kill the youngest, and the mom & dad will do nothing to stop it! It makes me feel bad for the baby chick. I hope that doesn't happen.

Also read that the next is approx 5 feet & can be as large as 9 feet, and weigh 2 tons!

Anyway, I'm enjoying watching this family.

I was referring to something I read from an Eagle research site.

I thought it was interesting. In fact, I was impressed with the size & weight of their nests.

11. I would imagine the eaglets have been responsible for lowering your blood pressure, eh?
:hi:

I find this quite a refuge from the ugly reality of what is happening to poor people in the budget right now.... people I know will be dying because of this, so to watch new life is a respite. And that is the value that Thoreau spoke about.

I think they are going to have to institute a 12-step program after the eaglets fledge! :)

I am so tired of my heart hurting for the human condition that this has become a respite for me. It is raw and real and without pretense.

And although I don't personally believe in 12 step programs, I will definitely have to find another outlet when these babies leave the nest!

32. Indeed. Its often a gang effect. Very sad.
Its why I refuse to say its all either the RW or the Dems. The people who call themselves Dems and "progressives" do the same shit, and say it doesn't smell.

The eaglets batter their own, and I see that as a metaphor.

Sad. :(

21. It sure is, and I'm guessing that a lot of those are school children, watching it in class.
A DUer teacher the other day talked about having 3 computers in the classroom, two tuned into this stream, and the third one being used to research the questions the class was coming up with.

Great teachable moments!

Now, if their standardized tests just cover eaglets, this class will do great! :)

28. The third eaglet that's not moving is usually the youngest and weakest.
If he asserts himself/herself in any way to draw attention, the older babies will attack.
He/she must remain submissive to survive.
One common way for an eaglet to do this is to flatten out and face AWAY from the dominant siblings.
Its chance of survival is dependant on the parents feeding him/her after the other chicks are stuffed and passed out in a "food coma".

The term for this is fratricide.
Advantage: female eaglets...because they are the bigger of the two sexes.

38. Someone mentioned that this particularly nesting pair have been successful at raising
babies.

From the FAQs
What is the history of this pair?
They have been together since the winter of 2007-2008. Her markings at that time indicated that she was about 4 years old. They successfully hatched and fledged 2 eaglets in 2008, then 3 in 2009, and 3 more in 2010.

Keeping fingers crossed that their streak will continue. :)

49. It's amazing to me what a sensation this has become.
So many people are watching and talking about it! These eagles are only 20 miles from my house, so it seems weird to have something from our local, rural area become a national phenomenon. Ahh, the power of the internet, I guess!

I had never seen a bald eagle my entire life until I reached adulthood, and now in this area they have made such an enormous comeback in the last 20 years that seeing them is fairly commonplace. That is a very cool thing. They are an awesome sight to see.
