Commandments Crusade: La. Parish Ignores Court Rulings, Pushes Religious Display
Source: The Wall of Separation
April 7th, 2011
By Sandhya Bathija

According to a Louisiana newspaper, the Rapides Parish Police Jury has voted 8-1 to put the Ten Commandments on courtroom walls. (A police jury is what the people in some parts of Louisiana call their county council; its members are elected by the voters.)

The jury approved a motion to display the Decalogue, despite a strong warning from jury legal counsel.

“There have been numerous court opinions that this would be inappropriate to do because of the tradition of church and state,” attorney Tom Wells said. “I know this is important to a lot of people, but my general opinion would be that this is inappropriate legally.”

He, of course, is right.

17. Just think, next hurricane more of us will die. You Americans will have less of us to worry about.

I'm sure it will make you feel warm and fuzzy, just like Katrina did.

Just commenting on the strangeness of your legal system and other things. As for your comments about Katrina. Well. Go fuck yourself.

2. You can post the 10 commandments everywhere but
the republicans refuse to follow the very laws that they claim to love, so its not going to do anything.

16. Setting aside for the moment the context in which they are said to have been given
these don't strike you as religious?

1.You shall have no other gods but me.

2.You shall not make unto you any graven images.

3.You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

4.You shall remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

6. Not everyone is christian. Some of those rules are pretty offensive to other religions
(like not making idols, or not bowing down to them which are pretty standard for Hindus for example).

There's a reason we should care about a separation of church and state. It means one religion can't assert itself over others, can't shame others, can't have official status, and that those who believe differently (or not at all) aren't reminded of that every time they walk into a government place. It needs to be neutral territory for all.

12. The Ten Commandments are not Christian
They were given to Moses, a Jew for the Jewish people to follow. If you want to post something from christianity, post the Beatitudes.

7. The issue isn't whether or not the 10 commandments are
right or wrong. The question is do religious groups have the right to proselytize their beliefs in public venues and if so, does that mean that other religions such as Islam and Judaism also may post their core beliefs in the same place?

10. The irony is...
these guys are creating legal precedents that will make it easier for other religions to do the same. They will be the first to scream about Muslim equivalents.
