April 12, 1861: The Civil War begins.
At 4:30 AM Friday morning, General Pierre Gustav Toutant Beauregard orders Confederate gunners to open fire on Fort Sumter. After 34 hours, Major Robert Anderson, who had instructed Beauregard in gunnery at West Point, surrenders the fort, evacuating the garrison Sunday. Although
there were no casualties during the actual engagement, one Union artillerest was killed and three wounded when a cannon exploded prematurely during a ceremony honoring the surrender.

2. I lived in Savannah for a couple of years, Michigan.
A totally different view of that period of time. I'll say it again. This is where we were headed the minute the first slave landed on these shores.

5. Yup. Denial is an amazing thing. I've been to Savannah. I loved the city. Very interesting.
Especially the graveyards and their history. I wish more cities had their squares, parks and so on. Beautiful trees.

4. And so it begins...
The war that still resonates. It may be the "new world", but like the others before us, we are defined by our past.
