How area schools rank

The percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced price meals in the 2010-11 school year, with the percentage change from the prior year. ....list....

The number of students who qualify for free and reduced meals is growing in most Chippewa County schools, including some where over half of the students qualify.

According to the state Department of Public Instruction, the county district with the highest percentage and the biggest jump is Lake Holcombe. At 56 percent, it is well above the state average of 41.4 percent. The district’s number increased 4.3 percent from the 2009-10 school year.

Lake Holcombe Superintendent Tom Goulet said standards for which students qualify for free and reduced lunches haven’t changed in recent years.

“I really couldn’t say why there’s been this huge jump. We just take every year as it comes,” Goulet said. “The only thing that’s changed is the ability to pay.”

To qualify for free meals, a family of four must make $28,665 or less annually. To be eligible for reduced meals, the same sized-family must have an income of $40,793 or less.
