every year, about this time, in this small town of some 3500, there is a massive influx of new vehicles, usually top of the line Fords, GMCs, Chevys, Rams...all decked out with the bells and whistles, all festooned proudly with "Farm" plates, using untaxed fuel to traverse the roads. These vehicles will not see a field for 5 or more years...that's why farmers out here keep 1967 Fords and Chevy pickups. Where all of these "overworked" farmers find the time to drive and park all over town is beyond me. Go to the local gas station and there are tables filled with these guys talking "shop", the weather, too much rain/too little rain, whose genetically engineered corn/soy gives a better yield...it really is a sight to behold. The subsidies have arrived.
Now I have a lot of respect for people that work the land, being a farmer is not all "planting and harvesting", they have to be electricians, mechanics, hydrologists, plumbers, carpenters, sheet sheet metal workers and a whole host of other things...but many have gotten quite wealthy at the expense of the government they so love to hate. I have yet to hear
one farmer who has refused a check from the government...much less returned one...but they will complain about "lazy welfare queens" and others that have been put out of the workforce.
Here is a site that shows every subsidy from 1995-2009...the search is easy, nation/state/county/zip code, you click it, it comes up...with names and amounts...:D
