Residents eager for Wal-Mart’s blue vests
Source: Miami Herald

At another place and time, a meeting between neighborhood residents and the operator of a proposed new big-box superstore would be occasion for a fight over traffic, property values and other land-use issues. But not in Richmond Heights in the aftermath of the Great Recession.

More than 60 residents came to a meeting with Wal-Mart officials Monday night asking for a chance at one of the 350 jobs the new store will create in neighboring Goulds — even though the store won’t open until 2012.

George Baldwin, a Richmond Heights community leader who organized the meeting with Wal-Mart, said many people in the neighborhood are relying on unemployment checks, and jobs at the store would be an improvement.

“I welcome Wal-Mart into our community, and want them to be our supporters and community partners,” Baldwin said. “With African-American unemployment at 17 percent, their presence in the community falls in line with the type of thinking that should be promoted — which is not depending on the government for money.”

6. Yep, blue polos now.
It is sad when all is left are low wage jobs at Walmart. "The Company" would prefer you to work for free if possible.

3. Ah, and here we see the outcome --
of globalization/break the Unions/"competetive" policies being foisted on us: break the American worker to the point they will welcome Walmart jobs (and the like) with open arms and be damned happy to have'em.

4. First they break you, then they take you
Bring you to your financial knees then offer minimum wages. Of course you are happy to get them, you have nothing else and the outlook is bleak.

This is class warfare.

I read read some letters between Huxley and Orwell, it is chilling how over half a century ago almost everyone of their estimations has come to pass with such chilling precision.

Being a prophet is not a gift, but a curse.

10. Perfect assessment.
It's both disheartening and awe-inspiring to read that type of prophetic wisdom from decades upon decades ago (the likes of Leary, Philip K Dick, Alan Watts, Buckminster Fuller, etc...), which really should have been taken as the warning signs they were. Seriously, you read that shit, and it's like it could have been written yesterday.

I have yet to read (or hear of) the letters between Huxley and Orwell, but will do now - thanks for the heads up!

11. We welcome our corporate masters.. C'mon in!
Bring us your low paying jobs, and your cheap made in China crap. And please don't forget to take all the money spent in your new store and be sure remove it from our local economy. We didn't need it anyway.

21. Yup, found it on page 2, locked and moved. However, you posted
it was in the wrong place many, many hours after the OP was made (Wed Apr-13-11 07:31). After that many hours, NOTHING is latest or breaking.

20. Wal-Mart
What a bunch of complete dicks - bringing jobs to people that do not have any!

The fucking gall of these asshole...

This is why many people accuse progressives of being elitist. Some folks are so bad off that working at WalMart is the only option. Many people have to work in places that they do not want in order to keep food on the table and keep their pride.

It is not the best situation - but, for some it is what they have to deal with.

Of course, you can go to the peopleofwalmart.com and make fun of the poor people that shop there - seems like a DU pasttime with some people.
