Right Wing NeoCon Radio In The Dallas Area......
I just got back from a 2&1/2 day trip to Dallas for business reasons. I had a rental car and had the radio on and found that it is all Right Wing Neocon Crazy Repug radio all day. I scanned the channels for a chance that I might find a Progressive radio station - but no luck. Every talk show was slamming Obama and the Dems continuously. It was relentless. But while listening to it all of a sudden it became entertainment to me. It was so far insane that it actually was funny.

One caller told the host of one of these programs that he has two sons in Afghanistan and that the soldiers there actually believe that Obama is working for the other side. He said that U.S. women soldiers can't wear Kevlar vests (he also said helmets too) and that they are made by Obama's military - to wear burka's. The host of the show went right along with this looney guy and encouraged him on.

I heard Obama being called a Marxist. Non-American. Kenyan. Alien.

As you may have guessed - the 'birthers' are in full force down there. They love Trump and there seemed to be a groundswell of support for him.

It was just unbelievable. And it appears that this goes on 24/7 in Texas and that everybody is brainwashed.

Have any other of you DU'ers out there had similar experiences?

1. I live in D/FW and you are right. There is no left-leaning talk radio here
at all. And, yes, everyone is brainwashed. It's a red fucking hell here and you can't tell these idiots anything. And they will go for Trump if he runs.

That's how goddamned stupid people here are.

2. 570/660/820/100.7/etc
Every station (even the sports talk stations here in Dallas) are RW garbage.

We used to have an Air America affiliate here, but they changed formats to Catholic talk radio.

Best to get XMSirius to avoid the hate. I did.

5. The switch to an all Catholic radio station happened in ...
.... in central Ohio too we now have three all Catholic radio stations
on the air. The lies of the right wing only works in a vacuum.

My :tinfoilhat: conspiracy theory is that a lot of the money that went
to flip progressive stations comes from a huge "slush fund" of money
that was skimmed off in W's Iraq war.

After Air America went to Catholic talk I went to sports talk, they are RW and when they talk anything but sports they are dumber and more willfully ignorant than Glenn Beck followers.

17. and the sport's talk station in Columbus, OH
fired their only decent reporter .... Bruce Hooley .... because he spoke
the truth about Jim Tressel. Now it is all Candy Cane Rainbows and Cute Fuzzy
Puppies and pay no attention to the fact that the NCAA is gonna hammer OSU ...
take away all the wins from 2010 & Tressel is gonna have to leave OSU too. The Wolfe
Family (Dispatch/WBNS) likes to control the media and the message.

It is snowing so Al Gore is wrong about Climate Change.

And yes many of the sports talkers spout idiot RW talking points too.

Dan Rather made up the story about W being AWOL

No Government Run Health Care Program for me

France is just a bunch of punks for not backing us in the Iraq war (even though they have been the most
loyal and some of the best fighters in Afghanistan since 2001)

I try to listen but I have to bail almost all the time.

3. "They" buy up and close down progressive radio stations
The lies of the right wing only work in a vacuum. And NPR does not fill the void.
We have had two progressive stations in Ohio closed down on us. In very blue N.E.
Ohio I was driving one night and it was nothing but Obama bashing and free market/
small government bullshit.

4. The callers to those shows are paid shills.
People that believe that crap are the gullible 30% of this nation that cannot be reasoned with in any event.

As far as the troops in the field go, I am related to an officer that was on the ground in Afghanistan, who was within 10 kilometers of Bin Laden when told to stop what he was doing, get all his men and materiel packed up as they were getting new orders (they were being sent to Iraq).

To say that he was angry was an understatement, but being a good soldier, did as he was told.

No way was Bush/Cheney going to let Bin Laden be captured; they made sure he would escape.

And Obama works for the 'other side'. Really.

God loves stupid people, he made lots of 'em.

7. you shoulda seen it back then
back around 2006 or so, we had this guy on klif late night - ankarlo - who blew glenn beck out of the water in terms of sheer lunacy. i used to tune in during my night shift on the way to lunch, just for kicks. i was looking for coast to coast, but ankarlo came on later. this was back before glenn beck got his fox show. they've got money on their side, that's for sure.

9. I used to fly in to DFW on business. I couldn't even deal with the so-called Rock stations.
All right-wing bullshit, and if the DJs weren't spewing it, the ads were.

This is the case all across America.

No matter what your number one issue is, number two needs to be media reform.

13. Terrestrial Broadcast Radio in America is Dead.
1) Most radio stations are in the hands of a few companies.
2) Most radio stations care more for the dollar signs than ratings or serving a community.
3) Most radio stations that try to serve a community are independent and/or and target a niche audience.
4) In emergency situations most radio stations just have an emergency broadcast service, triggered by NOAA if they broadcast out the right codes.
5) Most radio stations are not live and local during peak listening hours - and an awful lot aren't even that.
6) Even public radio (NPR affiliates) for the most part is in essence syndicated programming.
7) AM radio is a complete wasteland and again if it pays $$$'s, it airs - unless it is owned by a broadcaster who is into broadcasting for the love of it and does enough just to pay the bills.

There are I am sure a few exceptions. However the bottom line is this: I have yet to find a proper radio set up in the United States that dares to actually serve the community. WBRF out of Galax, VA comes close IMO (but because the listeners revolted over the format change - and their advertisers listen and they threatened to pull the $$$$s) but the situation is radio station owners are in it for the money first, and maybe the listeners get a show in somewhere. Perfect case in example: we had a local "modern oldies" format station, and the owner was approached by the owners of K-Love. The owner figured he could make more money by leasing the facilities to K-Love than running the station on his own. And as typical in the radio broadcast media, there was no announcement, no planning, a call from the owner to come in and pick up your things and final paycheck.

Now Broadcast Television... that does serve the general public for the most part - at least in our neck of the woods they do.

There is a reason why I have satellite radio in the vehicle and wifi radio in the house (a device that looks like a radio but works for streaming audio - and yes it'll do FM but I don't use that...)

Still got the shortwave radio somewhere too. Was interesting listening to China Radio International and the "Beijing Hour" whilst the power was out. Quite a different perspective, even from the BBC which I tend to listen to the most.

Mark.

16. You're right, a lot of public stations carry BBC World Service News feed overnight.
Wifi radio allows me to listen to BBC domestic stations, plus either the general or more newsy BBC World Service feeds.

My Roku allows me to watch BBC News (domestic), Al Jazzera English, Russia Today, France 24 and a few more live news stations.

20. Sounds similar to my business trip to northern OK
I flew into Wichita, KS and all I could find was Public radio out of Wichita. I drove south and got into a Public Radio void. Before I left I realized the rare station out of OU in Norman was too far away. That sucked being in a black whole. NPR stations in that part of the country are barebones (not like MPR I am spoiled with).

It is also pretty similar when you travel west of Valley City or Michigan, North Dakota (and drive out of MPR range). Prairie Public Radio is a shadow of what it should be and you have the usual AM fare from the right wing AM stations out there.

22. I was in Lexington, Kentucky over the weekend.
Some of my dad's friends were openly talking about going to the Rand Paul policy luncheon in front of me. By supporting Rand Paul, they're basically admitting to being teabaggers. I had to quite literally bite my tongue to keep from saying anything.

23. I thought most progressives
read their news, instead of listening to or watching it ;)

Next time you're in Dallas again, either pick up a copy of the Dallas Observer or get it online.

And before you broadbrush us all as being "brainwashed", do a little research. Houston has had one of the five Pacifica stations in operation since 1970 (KPFT.) Talk about progressive! :D
