McDonald's McNuggets made with 'Silly Putty' chemical
http://smirkingchimp.com/news/35590/mcdonalds-mcnuggets-made-with-silly-putty-chemical

"CNN has revealed that the fast-food chain makes this popular menu item with the chemical preservative tBHQ, tertiary butylhydroquinone, a petroleum-based product. Mcnuggets also contain dimethylpolysiloxane, "an anti-foaming agent" also used in Silly Putty.

Across the Atlantic in Britain, McNuggets don't contain these chemicals and they're less fattening.

TBHQ is a preservative for vegetable oils and animal fats, limited to .02 percent of the oil in the nugget. One gram (one-thirtieth of an ounce) can cause "nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, delirium, a sense of suffocation, and collapse," according to "A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives."

Dimethylpolysiloxane is used as a matter of safety to keep the oil from foaming, says. The chemical is a form of silicone also used in cosmetics and Silly Putty."

No thanks....It's been far more than a decade since I've had "chicken" McNuggets from McDonalds (or similar product anywhere else)...I think I'll keep it that way. :punk:

Google "pink goo filler added to ground beef" or "ammonia slime in ground beef" (if you decide you want to know). All I can say is that it has kept me away from fast food hamburgers almost entirely, since the first stories came out about a year ago. Yes, i got desperate once in that time and ate one when there was literally nothing else available. I find that if you add enough ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes and onions, you can sort of forget what might be under the bun. ;)

62. Yeah, as soon as I found out about that I started grinding my own.
I buy the large beef chuck and use my kitchenaid mixer grinding attachment. Break it up into 1 lb segments and freeze. I know exactly what's in there now, plus it's nearly $2/lb cheaper.

65. I don't think that grocery stores can add that to their ground beef...
I could be wrong, but I think it is only prepared patties and similar used by fast food restaurants... Regardless, I guess those of us without meat grinders could simply have the grocery store butcher grind it fresh from chuck while you wait. I don't think they charge for that, do they?

67. From the NYTimes article. Wish I knew about this earlier.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/31/us/31meat.html

With the U.S.D.A.’s stamp of approval, the company’s processed beef has become a mainstay in America’s hamburgers. McDonald’s, Burger King and other fast-food giants use it as a component in ground beef, as do grocery chains. The federal school lunch program used an estimated 5.5 million pounds of the processed beef last year alone.

----------------

I just made burgers with my own grind and everyone thought they tasted much better and fresher.

Edited on Sun Apr-17-11 08:44 PM by obxhead
I sold automotive paint and all the things that go along with it for 5 years or so. I obviously spent some time learning about products during that time.

It takes your liver 72 hours to filter lacquer thinner from your blood steam from just 10 seconds of bare skin exposure!

Once silicon enters your blood stream it can never be filtered out or otherwise evacuated from your body! It will flow through your body from the time it enters into you until you die. Remember that the next time you're hosing that crap onto your tires or dashboard to make them shiny.

56. Silicon is excreted via the kidneys.
"The mean urinary silicon excretion was 33.1 +/- 3.85 mg/day; the mean renal silicon clearance was 88.6 +/- 7.94 ml/min; the mean fractional excretion of silicon was 86.35 +/- 8.1%, and the mean urine silicon concentration was 0.265 micrograms/ml."

It's an essential trace nutrient that's in multivitamins, if we didn't eliminate it somehow we'd all end up half-metal monstrosities (which might actually be pretty cool).

Won't be the first time.
And silicone is pretty much inert. And if silicone is inert, then the kidneys cannot act on it, bla, bla, bla.
And being inert, it has a hard time being adsorb through the skin too.

17. K&R

tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ, tertiary butylhydroquinone) is an aromatic organic compound which is a type of phenol. It is a derivative of hydroquinone, substituted with tert-butyl group.

Applications

TBHQ is a highly effective antioxidant.<1> In foods, it is used as a preservative for unsaturated vegetable oils and many edible animal fats.<2> It does not cause discoloration even in the presence of iron, and does not change flavor or odor of the material to which it is added.<1> It can be combined with other preservatives such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). As a food additive, its E number is E319. It is added to a wide range of foods, with the highest limit (1000 mg/kg) permitted for frozen fish and fish products. Its primary advantage is enhancing storage life.

It is used industrially as a stabilizer to inhibit autopolymerization of organic peroxides. In perfumery, it is used as a fixative to lower the evaporation rate and improve stability. It is also added to varnishes, lacquers, resins, and oil field additives.

30. I was on the original team that created McNuggets.
Back in 1980. They did not start out with this junk in them back then. Keystone Foods was the creator. I don't know if they are still the company involved or not, cuz they let me go after the product was developed (my second job out of college). I was involved in the marketing end, but worked closely w/those doing the "creating" of the product. There were only 6 of us actually working on developing them....very small operation. When I think about how many have been eaten since then it blows my mind. I had bags of them in my freezer because we would run different batches using different techniques & seasonings. Never was there anything very "chemically" in them then. But that was 31 yrs ago......

I'll have to try them again, if ever I'm in Britain. The crispy outside, the sauces, yummy. But my tastes have changed (chard! I'd never heard of chard--yum!) Are you still in food product development? The whole 'need' to keep products fresh for long periods of time (as opposed to keeping fresh foods available in the distribution channel) has resulted in a lot of chemicals in the general US diet.

At least for another month or so. Then, I'm looking for another job. Not sure what avenue I'll go down next. LOL

We did put out a good product back in the beginning. But just like almost everything that's over 30 yrs old, there have been many changes....usually based on cost cutting, not product improvement. :(
If I ever get to Britain, I've got to try them again, myself.

I grew up eating chard, it's great! And so good for you, too. Haven't had it in years now. It's easy to grow, you've inspired me to plant some this year. Thanks! :hi:

The dimethylpolysiloxane is actually in the fryer oil, not the product. I work at a quite nice NYC fine-dining restaurant. We, along with every other place I know the details of, use bulk oil as a general-purpose neutral vegetable oil for all kinds of cookery as well as in the fryer. Sooo, pretty much anywhere you eat is probably going to have this stuff in the food. You could try specifically requesting the kitchen only use olive oil in your meal, but sometimes that's not technically possible (say in a stir-fry or sauté).

64. Doesn't surprise me a bit. Those little death nuggets have never passed...
...my kids lips.

It is the least a mother can do.

68. The "Silly putty chemical" is consumed by thousands every day.
Simethicone is an oral anti-foaming agent used to reduce bloating, discomfort and pain caused by excess gas in the stomach or intestinal tract. It is a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane and silica gel.
Simethicone is the active ingredient in most OTC anti-gas medications. I'm curious as to why they need to defoam McNuggets (this may raise questions about the source and quality of the meat), but the agent in question is not necessarily bad just because it also happens to be used in Silly Putty.

i kind of like the nuggets and fish filet sandwich
not all the time. but every once in a while i get a craving for them. but then i can go for a long time without having it.

i love their breakfast though and wished they would serve it all day. but then maybe not since i would eat more of it which isn't so healthy.
