That's because conservative towns are full of bigots, racists, xenophobes, homophobes, and general all around mean-spirited, intolerant shit-heads...

27. "Load up on guns, bring your friends, it's hard to lose, and to pretend..."
"Smells Like Teen Spirit", by Kurt Cobain (1967-1994)

In the book "Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana", Kurt Cobain relayed the thought that the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit was written "to describe what I felt about my surroundings and my generation and people my age."

to express themselves according to their preferences.

3. Not a surprise. More suicides under Conservative rule
More suicides under Conservative rule

The suicide rate increases under Conservative governments, research suggests.

Australian scientists found the suicide rate in the country increased significantly when a Conservative government was in power.

And an analysis of figures in the UK seems to suggest a similar trend.

The Australian team analysed suicide statistics for New South Wales between 1901, when the federal government was established, and 1998.

14. Teen suicide has nothing to do with the political orientation of a community
It's a tragedy for the FAMILY and the INDIVIDUALS who are affected by it.

16. I can think of a few things more disgusting.
Your grotesque twisting of the subject, for example.

Your seeming ignorance of the study described in the OP, for another.

And your "narcissism" quote... wow. A new low in the continuing assault on GLBT concerns.

Face it, there are plenty of things to inspire disgust here.

Your statements, chief among them.

The solution to teen suicide has nothing to do with being liberal or conservative.

I'll keep saying it over and over and over.

23. I was not offended by the article at all
Perhaps if a politican was using it as some sort of campaign point it could be offensive, but the article doesn't reveal anything real surprising...

From having some family members (whom i don't speak to anymore) who are very conservative, they are among the most judgemental and meanest people i know...

29. some of the factors certainly make sense
"The study's social index rated counties on five measures: prevalence of same-sex couples; registered Democratic voters; liberal views; schools with gay-straight alliances; schools with policies against bullying gay students; and schools with antidiscrimination policies that included sexual orientation."

It certainly makes sense that things like gay-straight alliances and anti-bullying/anti-discrimination policies could reduce the rate of teen suicide, and it makes sense that those would be more prevalent in liberal areas.

The study is restricted to Oregon, though ...

30. this is a small, sad part of an important overall discussion about quality of life
and its relationship to philosophy, politics, and budget. There are moral, health, mental health, education, upward mobility, degree of happiness, infant mortality, tolerance, world view, etc impacts that come with hardass, doctrinal-centered, top down, authoritarian approaches to life and politics.
