Report: Up To 400 NYPD Officers May Be Charged With Fixing Tickets
Hundreds of New York City Police Department officers could reportedly be facing criminal or disciplinary charges as part of an alleged ticket-fixing scandal.

According to the New York Post, as many as 400 officers are facing charges from all 12 precincts in the Bronx and possibly other boroughs.

The paper says police officers helped friends get out of parking tickets, moving violations or quality of life summonses by losing paperwork or missing court dates.

Police officers found guilty in department trials could be fired, lose benefits or be reprimanded and officers accused of tampering with documents or taking money could face criminal charges.

1. But if they were broken, that's just natural.
In my misbegotten yute, Chicago was infamous for its pencils.

If you ran a red, the cop would offer you a $5 pencil. If you were speeding, he'd sell you a $10 pencil. Drunk driving could mean a $20 or $25 pencil.

Then the city cleaned it up. They hired a guy who changed the rules and demanded that his cops stop taking bribes. He was very unpopular with the men in blue.

But that was just the start. Judges had been on the take, too, especially in criminal matters. If you want to read about a fascinating time in this city, check out "GREYLORD" a great true story about official corruption.

2. This happens constantly all over the country....
didn't know anyone would ever actually be charged with it, hahahaha.

I have a brother in law who is in law enforcement and told us all to just ask the guy who pulls us over if he knows him. Step mom did that once and sure enough, the officer apologized and she went on her way. It was amazing!! I don't think I'd have the guts to do it myself though.

Howard Stern use to talk all the time about this on his radio show cause I guess the NYPD would give out a card to people and all they have to do is flash that special card when they get pulled over and it gets them out of it.

3. What happened to all the other NYC police?
Don't they have any dedication to public service? ;-)

4. The Las Vegas DA's office has a "friends & family" plan
The thinking goes that employees -- either deputy DAs or office assistants or whoever -- are going to fix some portion of tickets anyway. So instead they have a form and a list, and keep track of who fixes tickets excessively or for money, reprimanding or firing as the case warrants. Ironically, this is the exact same argument they are totally dismissive of when it comes to marijuana legalization (can't beat it, so regulate it).

For the record, I have enough integrity to have never taken advantage of the program. (And honestly my last ticket was almost 10 years ago), but I'm not ashamed to admit that I recognized the teller at the window and she let me to the front of the line. And I'd do it again, too, because I'm a reprobate! You'll never take me alive, coppers!
