Internet providers begin blocking access to child porn sites (JPN)
TOKYO —

Major Japanese Internet service providers on Thursday began blocking access to more than 100 websites that offer child pornography.

The Internet Content Safety Association, which was established by 21 major Internet service providers in March, said users will be denied access to such websites, possibly including sites containing a single still or moving child pornography picture.

Police and the Internet Hotline Center Japan, both of which monitor illegal information on the Internet, will deliver their data on child porn websites to the Internet Content Safety Association, association officials said.

The association will listen to lawyers and experts and determine whether those images are child pornography. Member providers will in turn block access to those websites, they said.

In Japan, nine leading Internet service providers account for about 70% of all the country’s Internet service market. Among them are NTT Communications Corp, NEC Biglobe Ltd, Nifty Corp and Yahoo Japan Corp.

2. "and now this." The others were disasters of major proportions. "This" is a good thing.
It should happen here.

I'm not talking about a web site that displays a photo of the traditional naked baby on a rug or toddlers in the bath. Child pornography is a heinous offense that needs to be erradicated.

5. I wonder if this will include cartoon images
There has been a quite heated discussion over such images and if they should be permitted.

7. I don't like that one bit.
Who decides? By what criteria? Those who WANT to access those sites will find a way to do so. Blocking the sites at the ISP level opens a bad precedent.

8. Good intentions paving the road to one-state hell.
The people lost the right to be "secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects"

in cell phones because it made catching a drug dealer whose cell phone came in loud and clear on a cable box. So, now they, whoever they are, can listen into any conversation we have. Even when we buy and sell stocks.

Now, rather than finding offenders and prosecuting them, we will have some people, whoever they are, block us from anything they feel like they don't want us to know.

Sure, we don't like drug dealers and pedophiles, they're like dirty bath water, let's get rid of them. Oh, yeah, forget about the baby in that bathwater bucket.

Hey frogs, we're being boiled little by little. Soon, we'll be, uh, I dunno, can't seem to think anymore...

9. Can you imagine having to be the one whose job it is to look at these sites
and determine whether or not the images are kiddie porn? Jesus. That's like having to be the person who pieces together scattered body parts after a plane crash. I'd never be able to sleep again.

11. That would be disturbing

I would imagine, that like coroners, it takes a high degree of professional detachment, but it is hard to think it wouldn't cause a lot of stress.

12. Uh-oh. I have pics of my infant son on my computer.
If I upload them to PhotoBucket, can I get them closed down?
