Viewpoint: Old geezers change the channels to get slant on the news

I was tired but relieved. I had just driven from Texas in a car with no radio, two whole days without any Republican spin. Snags and I were watching the evening news in his living room. Snags is my favorite neighbor. “Hey, Johnny, lots happened while you were away. Let’s see what Fox News is reportin’,” said Snags as he changed channels.

A very attractive blond lady was announcing how everything was the Democrats’ fault. She spoke at great length about the need for shared sacrifice and how Social Security, Medicare, public education, pension trust funds, health care, alternative energy, mass transportation, civil rights, women’s rights, and workers’ rights were not what Americans wanted. Everything had to go!

Snags asked what I thought. “She’s nuts. Nobody will believe that,” I replied.

Snags turned his TV to a different channel where we watched an unshaven, crazy, old dude, his white hair a mess. He was clad in an orange jumpsuit and leg irons. With a microphone in his hand no less, he bragged how he had snuck up and murdered a doctor in church because the guy in the orange jump suit believed in God and the sanctity of life. The microphone passed to a smirking, head shaven youth clad in similar orange attire. He bragged how he snuck up and shot a congresswoman in the head.

“What do ya think, Johnny?”
