As Congressional GOP Faces Voter Anger at Town Meetings, Senator Urges Hiding Out in DC

This is an interesting twist, as it suggests that we are beginning to see a phenomenon where progressives are showing up to challenge conservatives—in much the way that Tea Partisans showed up at town hall meetings organized by Democratic congressmen and women in 2009. One of Ryan’s Republican colleagues, Wisconsin Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner, shut down a town hall meeting in a suburban Milwaukee community when he was challenged on economic issues in March. And Republican House members in other states, such as Pennsylvania and Ohio, have faced tough sessions.

So what should Republicans do?

Newly elected Illinois Senator Mark Kirk has an idea. Instead of hearing what the people have to say, the Republican senator is suggesting that members of Congress should hunker down in DC.

“Ideally the Senate would have not taken a two-week break,” Kirk said on CBS’s Face the Nation. Instead, the senator says, Congress should be advancing Ryan’s agenda.

4. Seems like a bit sneaky and underhanded to me

I thought that they were keeping the House in session less so that members could go back to their districts and meet with the people whom elected them, you know, so they wouldn't "lose touch" with what they wanted, right? :shrug:

2. Can't face the "American People"

they love to fondly talk about (and cry about)? I thought that they had a "mandate"? C'mon, they keep telling us day in and day out that this is what the American people supposedly want. Why are they so afraid to share your ideas about how to make the country better? :shrug:

Or maybe, their ideas aren't quite as popular as you think they are or they're trying to do things that you weren't elected to do. I don't think that last year's election- to the extent that they were about *something*- had anything to do with defunding Planned Parenthood or significantly changing Medicare in the manner in which they are proposing.

Does he think the people in this country will simply accept the fact that their members of congress won't hold town hall meetings and let them slide on this? Let them stay in D.C. and then democrats can start asking why they won't face the voters! Simply more good TV ads showing how republicans are to scared to talk about what they are doing, and how they are voting! It was OK when the teabaggers raised hell last year with the democrats, but now the shoe is on the other foot and they want to simply "hide out"?
