In the immediate aftermath of the explosion on 26 April, 1986, only one man endured the massive radiation levels to document the disaster, that was Russian photographer Igor Kostin.

In the years that followed, he continued to monitor the political and personal stories of those impacted by the disaster, publishing a book of photos called Chernobyl: Confessions of a Reporter. His images of a deformed boy even led to adoption of the 'Chernobyl Child' in UK.

1. "The Liquidators'

love that euphemism for the poor souls who did the dirty work. Like they were helping out with a closing of a shop in the mall. More like "the liquidated" -- expendable people.
