TSA at Lambert Int'l should be FIRED!
Why are they getting away with putting public safety at risk? 34 MINUTES lead time on the tornado warning, and wait til it's on the runway to get them to safety? How stupid is that?

40 if you want to count the St. Louis county warning before it, but the polygon didn't include the airport. The second warning DID.

Check the IEM meteorology site and the archives are there.

1. I doubt TSA is responsible for this.
That's not really their mission. They are just transportation security. Building management is more likely to be responsible. I bet a direct hit from a tornado isn't in the training material. But it will be in the future.

2. Doesn't the city or municipality own the airport? If not own - they have overall responsibility?

3. Didn't the TSA enter the picture on a ruse - took over the security on a federal basis - they
became terrorism focused - other people run the operation procedures?

4. Plenty of reason to bitch about the TSA, but this isn't one of them.
TSA isn't responsible for monitoring weather conditions.

Airport staff and local emergency management officials are where you should be directing your anger.

5. Maybe they couldn't get the tornado into one of Chertoff's scanners?
Then maybe no one wanted to pat it down?

:sarcasm:

6. Two incidents from my experience.
I was in La Guardia as a bad storm came in, and it was the waitress who warned us to move away from the windows.

At Denver, there were three alarms that were meaningless since no one knew what they meant. I figured that weird noise over the PA meant something, but I had no idea what. Then we were warned bu an announcement to move to the center of the concourse and into the lavatories. I moved promptly to the center, but stayed outside the lav waiting further developments. I had the hall pretty much to myself, I didn't see another person leve the boarding area.

Also, if you want to hear whining at a high pitch, be around when a pilot announces schedule changes due to weather conditions or flights are delayed. What is it people don't get that if the plane descends right now! you're going to be late because you'll be in the burn unit (if you're lucky) after the plane crashes?

8. The TSA doesn't do weather, you know.
I've never seen a weather radar at any TSA checkpoint. You're condemning the wrong folks, here.

9. Whatever...but....
TSA is part of the Feds. Let's say Lambert or the City is the "bad guy". The National Weather Service (PART OF THE GOVERNMENT) gave the warning, can't blame them. TSA is responsible for the security and safety of passengers at the airport. It could be a case of "it's not my job" quite possibly. IN ANY EVENT, SOMEBODY SAT ON THEIR ASS AND DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. It was PURE LUCK that there were no fatalities. There were injuries from glass cuts, by the way. Not sure what news source these others posters were reading.

Homeland, TSA, National Weather Service should be working together, but it's typical government "one hand doesn't know what the other is doing" b.s.

10. Well, someone certainly doesn't know what he/she is doing.
That's very clear. Good luck.

11. TSA doesn't deal with flight operations.
Edited on Tue Apr-26-11 07:07 PM by MindPilot
Weather issues are handled mostly by the airlines' own ops centers and the FAA. Ultimately the decision about how a particular aircraft deals with a particular weather situation lies with that aircraft's captain. Overall saftey at the airport itself; that is most likely the local PD.

TSA's only jurisdiction is trying to make sure bad things and bad people don't get to the gate area.
