Sony: PlayStation credit data possibly stolen
Source: CBS News/AP

Sony says credit card data of PlayStationusers may have been stolen in an intrusion that has caused its PlayStation Network to be put out of commission for the last week.

The company shut down the network, which connects players in live game play worldwide, last Wednesday after it says account information for certain players was compromised.

It says it has hired an outside security firm to investigate what happened and has taken steps to rebuild its system to provide greater protection for personal information.

Sony. says an unauthorized person obtained informationincluding players' names, addresses, birth dates, email addresses, passwords and log-in names. The company says that although it has no evidence credit card information was taken, it says "we cannot rule out the possibility."

3. Don't you think your anger
should be directed at Sony for leaving your data unprotected? I applaud them for bringing down the network, and losing tons of revenue to protect customer data from further being exposed. But if the proper measures were in place, this would not be an issue... all data would be encrypted byte streams; useless outside of the environment.

4. No because no matter how much protection Sony puts on their systems
Hackers are going to try and probably eventually succeed at breaking them.

5. And they didn't know this
when they got into this business? I always design my systems... KNOWING, that someone is going to attempt to thwart any data protections I put in place.

Note: I am not on the side of the hacker, completely the contrary... I just don't feel that Sony has the right to use them as a scapegoat for their lack of implementing a good security model.

7. I was wondering the same...
I thought that maybe a personal data breach of 70 million people was not considered "late breaking" enough.

10. A couple of weeks ago
some clown used my simplest Yahoo mail account to start up a Playstation account. I promptly wrote back to them to tell them I didn't set one up.
