2. Power is out and cell towers were blown down
so all you can do is wait until enough infrastructure has been repaired that either she will call you or you can contact the authorities.

This is the worst part, the waiting.

5. Try texting instead of calling. Texts often get through even when a phone is showing "no signal."

Also, try and find a HAM Radio Emergency Relay operator.

29. Thanks from me, too. We've been calling my sister and
nieces in Alabama all day and gotten no answer. I've left messages on their cell phones, but didn't think to text. I'm going to try that now.

22. My mom's house in Arkansas took a direct hit a few days ago
So I know what that feeling is like.

For the record, she's fine, the house is mostly fine. No power for a few days and no phone, but otherwise okay.

It's still all I can do not to get in the car and drive to Arkansas though.

I feel a little guilty, though, because there are so very many people who aren't okay tonight. If I was a praying man...

26. I don't know how old your mother is,
but you might want to go there as soon as you can. My Dad was in his 70s when he had severe wind damage to his house. It left him quite dazed and depressed for a time. Hope all is well.

30. I've offered (she's 66)
She's at my aunt's house right now, just a few miles down the road -- they have electricity and food. I've offered to go, but she said no and probably doesn't need me for anything practical. She also said it would be hard to get a substitute this time of year (she taught school for 42 years) -- which is an almost stereotypical response for her. In fact, after letting me know she was okay, she told me in great detail what she'd heard about the physical condition of every school in a twenty-five mile radius -- schools in which neither of us ever, in our lives, attended or worked in.

She's a lot like me: she's probably far more concerned about her neighbors and is even now conceiving of a charity drive to help the many survivors who will need aid.

Thanks fr the hug!

32. Thinking of you
I just heard from a relative in Japan today. Sometimes it takes awhile for survivors to get up and running again.
