"Frenzy About Royal Wedding Should Embarrass Us All" -- Meanwhile, in Canada...
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 09:46 AM by JackRiddler
The quote is from author Johann Hari today on Democracy Now.

I saw CNBC or someone had prepared a one-hour documentary yesterday (which somehow I missed) about the life of the young non-entity (nothing against her personally) who's going to marry the non-entity. CNBC pretends to be news media, that's the problem. I don't care what the celebrity channels do.

Meanwhile, Japan/Fukushima (apparently some glitch with Playstations is more important), Yemen, Syria, Bahrain, Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Afghanistan, or even the US austerity assault... huh? These do not compute!

THE GOOD NEWS

is that I hear Canada may be on the brink of a true political earthquake in Monday's election, with the genuine socialist NDP pulling way ahead of the neocon Liberals in the polls to directly challenge the hyper-neocon Conservatives for the lead position.

And apparently the all-out Canadian corporate media assault on the NDP (its election would bring the apocalypse!) is being hampered because the corporate media who would be doing that are too busy with some fucking wedding involving the royal family who used to be Murder Incorporated, but are now more like Inbred Sideshow.

So maybe something good will be coming of this wedding frenzy after all.

1. Funny Wonkette comment on King Thiedericus of Liesgau...
Fox News has some hot Internet search results for you Royal Wedding fans of “princess Diana death photos.” It turns out that when bored gullible people get riled up by the entertainment-news media about the bloodline of some inbred Bavarians being ritualistically continued in a terrifying televised ceremony, Cyber Crime follows the voyeuristic mob like starving orphans in a Dickens’ tale. Some random Computer Security Experts tells Fox News, “It’s very important for consumers to enjoy it — it is a joyous occasion, after all — but be careful. They’re preying on people.” Very important, true. But the Royals are always preying on people. Isn’t that the whole point of having some random family tree of genetic mutations ruling over 62 million people because the Saxon Boar King Thiedericus of Liesgau smote Ceengør of Ålk in the summer of 953 near modern-day Blankenburg? 2. Regarding Playstation...
It wasn't a glitch, it was a massive theft of people's addresses and credit card numbers. 80 million people were affected by it, which means 80 million people are at risk for identity theft as a result of Sony's incompetence. I hope there is a class action lawsuit against them for negligence.

5. Sure, it's a news story, I agree.

It's important to inform the 80 million people about it, it should get coverage, and Sony should get sued. All yes. So sorry for calling it a "glitch." On an exponential 7-point disaster scale where the daily Windows security failures are a 1 and the complete erasing of the Internet is a 7, this rates a 2.3.

The prospect of continued releases of radioactive material into sea and atmosphere and the creation of a Chernobyl-sized dead zone displacing two million people, plus what that should mean for the rest of us also threatened by similar disasters, should remain the far bigger story.

But anyway, the joke is that this wedding is all that matters to the news media this week -- I don't even see how the lame sideshow even qualifies as circus, in a time of no bread.

12. I agree...
Although as far as America is concerned, my biggest concern is potential hyperinflation. The debt and money printing are out of control. At some point it is going to catch up with us if we don't do something about it. Yet the media is obsessed with birth certificates and royal weddings. :(

4. I live in Canada
Watched the news the other night - when the orange surge actually caught everyone off guard....you should have seen the deerintheheadlights looks from all the political spinmeisters.....HILARIOUS!

Whining about the Royal Wedding trumping their chances to get their message out regarding Layton.
Harper using words like - utter devastation should the NDP take power.....snort, giggle.
Ignatieff rolling out Chretien in hopes he could find a way to slow the rising NDP tide.....Chretien finally admitted that he just now recently actually read the NDP platform.
And poor Duceppe....pulling out PARIZEAU - OHMYGAWD - the desperation is frantic.

I have no idea what will happen on May 2. But I do know this.....the electoral turnout WILL be high. And all canadian eyes will be firmly planted on the results. Somehow our boring elections just got very very interesting....and I am lovin it!

what I can say is that if the NDP numbers stick in Quebec -they will have done what the liberals and conservatives failed to do - bring back a federalist party to Quebec that Quebeckers approve of. In itself - that is HUGE.

Also, a person must be cognizant that whatever the outcome - it will be a minority....it would not surprise me that Harper and Ignatieff might try to form a coalition - such is their desperation.

11. Hilarious is right
When the whole 'orange surge' starting happening, all the news channels started questioning the accuracy of the polls they were so shocked. They kept saying, "let's wait and see what this NEXT poll says" and each poll just showed increasing NDP support. They didn't know what to do! lol! Deer-in-headlights is right!
Unfortunately, I am not certain that the widespread support will turn into seats for the NDP. However, just the amount of support, I think, is a turning point in Canadian politics. I have conservative family members that have nothing but good (!) things to say about Jack Layton. In fact, my brother I think LIKES the NDP but has been so brainwashed he keeps saying, "but how are they going to pay for everything? That's my only problem..." When hard right people start saying stuff like that...well...you get an orange surge!

6. I'm absolutely shocked by the polling showing the NDP over 30%...
The Conservatives will probably still win more seats, tho.

Dare we hope for a coalition government?

16. 'Operation Pumpkin' prepped for royal runaway bride scenario

(Damn, it would have been so much more interesting if this had happened!)

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/28/operation_pumpkin/

By Marmaduke LaHussy, Reg royal correspondent

Posted in Bootnotes, 28th April 2011 11:15 GMT

Police and spooks in charge of security for tomorrow's royal wedding have planned for every possible eventuality - including that of Kate leaving Wills at the altar.

The top-secret contingency plan for a "runaway bride" scenario has been dubbed "Operation Pumpkin", and if put into effect would see hundreds of operatives switch tasks in a desperate attempt to generate a moving security cordon around the escaping future Queen - while simultaneously attempting to preserve Prince William's option to pursue and dramatically win her back.

"Frankly, it's a nightmare scenario," one highly-placed MI5 source confessed to the Reg yesterday. "But you have to plan for every possible contingency, and let's face it, this one's hardly that unlikely, is it? Obviously we had to get together with Clarence House and work something out.

"Naturally, they wanted us to simply make her go through with it - but we said you must be joking: in the UK, in front of millions of witnesses? No way. And the plods would never play ball anyhow.

"So we said, look, if she bottles it we'll just have to get her out pronto, helicopter off the roof maybe, then sort her out with a new identity and young Bill will just have to go on the honeymoon on his own."
