So far Donald Trump has been creating buzz about whether or not he’ll run for president in 2012 by having made looking into Barack Obama’s past – specifically, his birth certificate and college transcripts – his major focal points. But perhaps people in glass luxury hotels shouldn’t throw stones. Trump’s financial records and tax returns have already been a topic of discussion among those in the media, and Rand Paul recently demanded that Trump show his “original long-form certificate of Republican registration.” And, now, some digging around into Trump’s own past has revealed that the man who might maybe sort of possibly make a bid for President may have actively avoided serving his country. Keep in mind: Trump has made his own proposed plans regarding military action abundantly clear and also formerly attended the New York Military Academy.

This week, Trump discussed why he did not fight in the Vietnam War with local Fox affiliate WNYW:

I actually got lucky because I had a very high draft number. I’ll never forget, that was an amazing period of time in my life.

I was going to the Wharton School of Finance, and I was watching as they did the draft numbers and I got a very, very high number and those numbers never got up to.

What Trump didn’t mention, however, was that he actively avoided serving. According to The Smoking Gun, the business mogul’s Selective Service records reveal that by the time his draft number – 356 – was drawn during the December 1, 1969 draft lottery, Trump had received four student deferments and one medical deferment. These can be seen in a document on file with the National Archives and Records Administration.

6. The Medical Deferment Might Have Been Draft Avoidance

but not the student deferments.

What the article doesn't make clear is that that before 1969, as long as you were in college you got a deferment. While a few people volunteered, the large majority of students availed themselves of this opportunity.

When the system changed to a lottery, student exemptions were pretty much eliminated. So Trump seems to have lucked out.

That medical deferment might be examined, but then Howard Dean got kind of a soft deferment, too.

And I object to any who has not been in the military getting us involved in non-defensive wars. Including our President. Iraq never was a defensive war and should have been ended the minute Obama took the oath. Afghanistan has long since been defensive and the 'surge' has not got the situation any better. Libya is simply a war of of aggression on behalf of our European allies. But I guess I'm getting off topic.

Something like 60% of those eligible found a way to avoid it. 70,000 went to Canada.

While the Donald is a complete POS, his deferrments were completely legal, and his 1969 lottery number nearly guaranteed that he wouldn't be called up. Highest number called that year was 195.

, if they ever had it, of the difference between those who simply avoided the draft--Clinton for instance--and those who avoided but later turned into warmongers.

Google Chickehawks, there are a few websites that list the large number of Repukee cowards who are warmongers. Looking at the replies to this OP is like looking at the Repukes trying to defend their chickenhawk leaders back in the Bush era. Hmmmmmmmm.....are you Duers really dems?

When a Vietnam vet with a Purple Heart is painted as the un-patriotic one while the guy who's daddy got him into the National Guard to avoid service is painted as the Tough American Patriot then service is no longer an issue...

Remember the Republicans went as far as to put out "Purple Heart" band-aids to show how the man who went to war and got injured was weaker than the man who avoided it.
