Ohio University to Consider Taking Stand Against Violence in Congo

ATHENS, OH—Ohio University may soon become the first public university in the nation to adopt a “conflict-free” policy in opposition to electronic companies that fund human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The OU Board of Trustees is considering a resolution that would acknowledge the link between conflict minerals found in electronics and human rights abuses in the DRC, and express the university’s disapproval.

War has raged in the DRC since 1994 due to complex domestic, regional and global events.

“Systematic rape, forced labor and child soldiering, as well as almost six million deaths, are among the human costs of the war,” OU alumnus and Project Congo CEO Sylvia Gleason said.
