NY 1st Congressional District Primary June 26th - who are you voting for?

Who is the best chance to unseat Zeldin? I was doing a little reading, and I like Elaine Di Masi, but haven't done due diligence in reading much about the others, except the article below. Wish I had seen the debates. They all seem to have similar ideology, but have a different message that they want to bring to voters to win (anti trump, jobs, etc). I feel like this is a horse race and I’m basically looking for “the favorite”, but it is what it is I guess.

http://www.27east.com/news/article.cfm/East-End/557602/Democrats-Face-Off-At-Debate-In-Hampton-Bays

ETA additional info:

Candidates (source for money raised: FEC) :

Perry Gershon 1.4M raised
Kate Browning 368K raised
David Pechefsky 236K raised
Vivian Viloria-Fisher 152K raised
Elaine DiMasi 85K raised

Going by fundraising as "favorite":

Gershon has the most funds raised - half seem to be self-funded. Not fond of voting for someone with no political experience, and a Commercial RE/Finance background - I'd rather see our congress have less incentive to be lobbied. But all his stances tick most of my boxes.

Going through donors for these candidates, I did find something disturbing - Kate Browning's top donor is Renaisance Technologies (Robert Mercer): https://www.opensecrets.org/races/contributors?cycle=2018&id=NY01&spec=N
They also contributed to David Pechefsky for a smaller amount.

Backgrounds:

Kate Browning, who has served 12 years in the county Legislature and is term-limited from running again, said supporters have urged her to run for Congress ... A resident of Shirley and a native of Northern Ireland, Ms. Browning, 58, was elected to the Legislature with Democratic backing but was registered with the Working Families party until she recently changed her enrollment to Democrat.

Viloria-Fisher, 69, is a native of the Dominican Republic and served in the Suffolk Legislature from January 1999 to December 2011. Previously, she had been foreign language department chairperson at Ward Melville High School since September 1997. She has been a planned parenthood board member, and also ticks most boxes. Has a strong pro-environment voting record.

Henry, 36, graduated from Westhampton Beach High School and has degrees in political science, history and education from Long Island University. “I taught at Eastern Suffolk BOCES, working with people who have autism and behavioral issues,” he said. “Then I had a car crash and I stopped teaching. I went back to my roots working in service, which is what a lot of my family has done,” he said.
Mr. Henry currently works as a bartender in Buckley’s Inn Between in Hampton Bays and at the Southampton Publick House.

Gershon, 55, who announced his intention to run for Congress on July 15. He has worked in commercial real estate for more than 25 years and told The Suffolk Times he is running in this election to fight against health care being taken away from Americans and to “restore the middle class". Per his website: Perry is fighting for universal backgrounds checks and a ban on assault weapons. He's strong on unions and pro-choice.

Pechefsky, 49, a graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School, is a longtime staff member with the New York City Council and has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Hunter College and a master’s in international development from American University in Washington, D.C. His campaign website says he’s running for Congress “because we need to take our government back from [President Donald] Trump and his apologists and enablers like Lee Zeldin.”

Ms. DiMasi, 48, is a former Brookhaven National Laboratory physicist of 21 years. “My vision for Long Island creates a re-energized economy with new jobs in the clean energy sector. Evidence-based policy will right-size the regulations, so we have affordable protections that work,” she said on the Facebook site.

Browning & Pechefsky are a definite scratch out for me. Again, I like DiMasi and her background, and the fact that she's a scientist, but don't think she has much of a chance to win. It's going to be a choice between Viloria-Fisher & Gershon for me.

Justice Department spokesperson Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement she shared with TPM:

The Department has asked the Inspector General to expand the ongoing review of the FISA application process to include determining whether there was any impropriety or political motivation in how the FBI conducted its counterintelligence investigation of persons suspected of involvement with the Russian agents who interfered in the 2016 presidential election. As always, the Inspector General will consult with the appropriate U.S. Attorney if there is any evidence of potential criminal conduct.

She added the following statement from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein:

“If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action.”

The Justice Department’s inspector general, Michael Horowitz, announced in March that he would probe the FBI’s application for a surveillance warrant to suveil a member of Trump’s campaign — believed to be foreign policy adviser carter page.

Question about star membership

If I purchase star membership, does my personal info get stored on this site? The only reason I haven't so far is because of worry that the site will be hacked again. I can do paypal, if that is a safer way.

Anyone would have to be blind if they think that Trump is not Putin's puppet and is some unwitting part in all this.

The (non) client list that Cohen's attorneys provided

https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4438420-Letter.html

I can't copy/paste. Maybe someone can screen capture? It appears they only named Trump and Elliot Broidy and didn't name the supposed "hundreds" of clients Cohen use to have.

Thought this will get lost in news cycle: Olympic doping ban overturned for 28 Russian Athletes

http://www.cnn.com/2018/02/01/europe/russia-doping-ban-lifted-on-28-athletes-intl/index.html

(CNN) Doping bans on 28 Russian athletes were overturned on Thursday, throwing the International Olympic Committee's policy on Russian doping into chaos just over a week before the start of the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

The Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the appeals of athletes given lifetime Olympic bans for doping violations during the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, saying there was insufficient evidence to show they had broken the rules.

The ruling means that athletes' 2014 results are reinstated and they could now seek to participate in the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, which open on February 9.

Russian cross-country skiing star Alexander Legkov , who won gold at Sochi 2014, is among those whose bans were lifted.

In a further 11 cases, CAS ruled that doping violations had been committed but that lifetime bans were not justified and the punishments were cut to a ban for the 2018 Games alone.

The IOC said the decision "may have a serious impact on the future fight against doping," and added that it could yet appeal the decision at the Swiss Federal Tribunal, the country's highest court.

Among the reinstated athletes were cross-country skiing gold medalist Alexander Legkov, men's skeleton gold medalist Alexander Tretiakov and women's skeleton world champion Elena Nikitina.

Aleksandr Zubkov, the double Olympic bobsled champion and Russian flag bearer in Sochi, is among the 11 whose doping bans were upheld.

Russia's Alexander Tretiakov won a gold medal in the men's skeleton. It was not immediately clear if any of the 28 would seek to take part in Pyeonchang. To be eligible to compete in South Korea, they would need to be cleared by the IOC Invitation Review Panel and subsequently selected to join the team of 169 Russian athletes competing as neutrals,. The IOC banned the entire Russian team from the 2018 Games for a "systemic manipulation" of anti-doping rules. Russia denies the charge.

The Kremlin said it was "very happy" with the decision. "This information about the CAS decision regarding our athletes confirms that active efforts to protect their rights in courts and in other ways are justified, they can be effective and they must continue," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on a conference call with journalists

I never had a chance to watch the Russian doping documentary, so I don't fully understand the significance, but from what I do understand it's a very big deal regarding Putin corruption. Also what a coincidence that Trump visited Switzerland and then this happened? Go figure!

CIA director Pompeo met top Russian spies

http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/30/politics/cia-director-pompeo-russia-spies/index.html

and so did Dan Coates https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/01/the-trump-administration-let-a-russian-spy-chief-visit-the-us-even-though-he-was-legally-barred/

"CIA Director Mike Pompeo recently met with his Russian counterparts when they traveled to the US, according to US ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman.

Russian media is reporting those who met with Pompeo may have included the country's sanctioned spy chief, Sergey Naryshkin.
Talks between top US and Russian intelligence officials occurred just days before Pompeo once again warned that Russia will attempt to meddle in the 2018 US midterm elections and the Trump administration released a sweeping list of prominent Russian political and business figures in defiance of Moscow.

While neither US nor Russian officials explicitly said that Pompeo and Naryshkin met, both sides confirmed that talks occurred between intelligence counterparts and Russia's US ambassador, Anatoly Antonov, said that Naryshkin made a trip to the US for discussions. "

The Trump administration allowed the head of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, Sergey Naryshkin, to visit the United State last week, despite US sanctions that are supposed to bar Naryshkin from entering the country.
“Which other sanctioned Russia intelligence agency figures has the Trump administration let into our country?”

Naryshkin’s visit drew no notice at the time, but after Russia’s US ambassador Anatoly Antonov announced the visit on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) raised the issue in a press conference later in the day. “This is an extreme dereliction of duty by President Trump, who seems more intent on undermining the rule of law in this country than standing up to Putin,” Schumer said.

Naryshkin met last week outside Washington with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, Reuters reported. Antonov said that Naryshkin’s meetings addressed the “joint struggle against terrorism,” though he did not offer further details.

News of the visit drew condemnation from congressional Democrats already fuming over the Trump administration’s refusal on Monday to impose new sanctions against Russian defense and intelligence firms—sanctions that were required by bipartisan legislation President Donald Trump begrudgingly approved in 2017. (The 2017 sanctions law passed Congress with veto-proof majorities.)

He's barred from entering the U.S. This can't be normal.

Requiem for an American Dream

I'm not sure if this video has ever been posted here or discussed. I'm relatively new here, so not sure. I saw this on netflix and was blown away. It's so relevant right now. The only thing I don't agree with is the statement about "rhetoric from Obama" and his "hopey changey message". I think Obama brought a lot of "hope & change". But obviously the backlash we see now is from the right who don't want to progress at all, or the government who wants to oppress it. This documentary opened my eyes as to the method of (conservative/authoritarian/GOP...insert whatever from the RW) govt madness.

I found the full version on youtube (hopefully its full version):

Hopefully I've got the linking right.

If I had hope trumpsters would watch one movie, it would be THIS! The.GOP.are.not.out.for.your.best.interests.!!
Unless you are a rw christian evangelist, in which they just don't care about anything except their conservative causes
being fulfulled, best interests be damned.

Assistant principal pens conservative children's book featuring Pepe the frog

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/assistant-principal-publishes-pepe-frog-children-book-article-1.3405208?

Baloney he didn't know Pepe is a symbol of white supremacy. He will no doubt rake in the dough, and he probably knew this.

All the deplorables will eat this up to read to their children. Nothing like an alt right political story before bedtime to seed the little children's minds.

I believe Pepe is trademarked character (with no ideological intentions), so I hope the original author sues him.
