After Rays decry shootings, Florida governor vetoes funding for possible team facility

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/06/03/desantis-rays-practice-facility/

This is unconstitutional!!!

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday vetoed $35 million in state spending for a youth sports complex in Pasco County, a project that had been pitched as a potential spring training site for the Tampa Bay Rays.

The money was included in the $112 billion budget plan sent to DeSantis by state legislators earlier this year. DeSantis, however, has line-item authority to veto specific expenditures, and he used that to cut a record $3.1 billion out of the initial budget proposal.

On May 26, the Rays issued a statement decrying the recent mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, and said the franchise would be making a $50,000 donation to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun-violence prevention organization.

“This cannot become normal,” the team statement read. “We cannot become numb. We cannot look the other way. We all know, if nothing changes, nothing changes.”

At a public speaking engagement Friday, DeSantis said he doesn’t “support giving taxpayer dollars to professional sports stadiums, period.” But DeSantis, a gun-rights supporter who is pushing the state to allow residents to carry concealed firearms without a permit, also suggested that the Rays’ support of a gun-control organization also factored into his decision.

Do Republicans and Democrats really hate each other? Not as much as you think, study says

https://www.studyfinds.org/republicans-democrats-hate/

Political polarization in America may be at its highest point in decades. Sometimes, it can seem like Republicans and Democrats hate their political opponents more than they love their own side. However, a new study finds that hatred doesn’t run as deep as many may think. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania say negative partisanship is largely exaggerated — with political agents and the media mainly responsible for stoking those flames.

A team from Penn’s Annenberg School for Communication set out to answer two questions: First, how widespread is partisan hatred? Then, is that hatred really more intense than an American’s love for their own party?

Using several different methods, including a survey examining how political polarization and hatred of an opponent affects party affiliation, researchers found that the main reason Americans choose their political party has more to do with love than hate. The team also looked at how loyal voters are to their party based on their hatred of the opponent. To do this, they used an experiment which separated hurting the opposing political party monetarily and helping their own party monetarily.

The results continue to show voters are generally more interested in supporting their own political beliefs rather than hurting someone else’s. Moreover, the team notes the implications of continuing negative partisanship are problematic for society.

Naomi Judd Death Under Investigation

https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/naomi-judds-death-is-under-investigation-sheriffs-department-says/

The Franklin County Sheriff’s department has launched an investigation into the shocking death of country legend Naomi Judd.

“It’s an open investigation, currently we are not releasing any reports, 911 calls or bodycam or dashcam footage. This is a death investigation which is ongoing,” Public Information Officer Williamson said in a statement to Us Weekly on Monday, April 2. “There is no police jurisdiction in that area, so only the sheriff’s department attended. We are awaiting information from the detectives from the criminal investigation division.“

Basically they are trying to figure out if anybody was present when she took her life, and if so, is the situation avoidable. If it was considered that the person or persons were there and had the ability to curtail the attempt, they could be charged with negligence and/or reckless endangerment.

The right wing media are outraged with the SCOTUS leak.

It seems they are determined to find out who leaked (in reality, whistle blew) the RvW opinion.

US Senate considering holding hearings to Elon Musk purchase of Twitter

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-04-28/musk-is-in-senate-democrats-sights-over-plans-to-buy-twitter

Some key Senate Democrats are considering calling Elon Musk to testify on his plans to remake Twitter, amid broader calls in Congress for new regulations for tech and social media companies.

There are no imminent plans for hearings, but, “We’re thinking about it,” Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell said in an interview Thursday.

The Washington state Democrat noted the committee has previously had hearings with former Twitter Inc. Chief executive Jack Dorsey, Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Alphabet Inc. CEO Sundar Pichai. They were questioned about a decades-old legal shield that protects social media companies from liability for user-generated content posted on their sites, commonly referred to as Section 230.

Markey said the Commerce Committee makes sense as the venue given its jurisdiction over the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission.

“In terms of what the values are that this company is going to be creating for the new Elon Musk Twitter world, I think that’s actually a necessary role for Congress to play,” he said.

There is only one way Will Smith can redeem himself with his career fully intact.

When you think of the Oscars of 2022, no one will remember the groundbreaking winners, nor Smith's speech. The slap overrided everything that was represented. There is but one way for Smith's redemption. I feel he must voluntarily surrender his Oscar and title as Best Actor of 2022. If the Academy strips him, that will only bring annoying legal battles we all are gonna hear in the media.

AMPAS Launches Investigation In The Smith/Rock Incident

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2022-03-28/will-smith-oscars-slap-film-academy-investigation

Following Sunday night’s stunning altercation at the Oscars, in which Will Smith slapped Chris Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, the motion picture academy announced Monday it is conducting a formal review of Smith’s conduct.

“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show,” the organization said. “We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences enacted a code of conduct for its members in 2017 in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal. “There is no place in the Academy for people who abuse their status, power or influence in a manner that violates recognized standards of decency,” the group said at the time. “If any member is found by the Board of Governors to have violated these standards or to have compromised the integrity of the Academy by their actions, the Board of Governors may take any disciplinary action permitted by the Academy’s bylaws, including suspension or expulsion.
