Discuss the Democratic Debate line by line

Fiskkit has developed a platform for in-line news commenting that "turns discourse into data," making the discussion more useful, factual, productive, accountable, civil and enjoyable. Structured data allows them to statistically fact-check all online news in real time, and empower readers to filter trolling without resorting to censorship or moderation. They released a public beta at the Launch Festival in 2015 and were awarded the Social Impact Award by the Grand Jury.

The tool in the past has been used for fact checking and discussing the debates, as well as other news articles.

I think it would be an awesome tool for us all to use to comment on articles and debates (they also had the state of the union last week).

They're a new startup, and it's really for the good of all that it does well.

Bernie Sanders sees poll surge after series of record-breaking appearances

Source: The Guardian

Bernie Sanders has more than halved the gap with Hillary Clinton in the early-voting state of Iowa, according to a new poll which shows the leftwing insurgent building on his recent record-breaking public appearances with growing support among key Democratic voters.

An estimated 10,000 supporters filled an arena in Madison, Wisconsin, on Wednesday night to hear the Vermont senator call for “revolution” in American politics as he challenges Clinton for the party’s nomination in the 2016 presidential election.

Sanders told the crowd: “Tonight we have made a little bit of history. Tonight we have more people at any meeting for a candidate of president of the United States than any other candidate.”

Though still seen as a long-shot candidate when compared with the former secretary of state and establishment favourite Clinton, the momentum behind Sanders’ uncompromising progressive message is also beginning to show in opinion polling.

Age of puberty predicts diseases in later life, find researchers

Source: Press Association via Guardian

The age that children hit puberty has been found to be a significant predictor of their health in later life, researchers say.

The University of Cambridge study confirms previous findings of a link between early puberty in women and heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and has shown for the first time that early puberty in men is also associated with these conditions.

Those who went through puberty relatively early had around 50% higher relative risks for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. However, women and men who went through puberty relatively late had a higher relative risk of developing asthma.

Researchers from the Medical Research Council (MRC) epidemiology unit at the University of Cambridge found that the age at which both men and women begin puberty is associated with a total of 48 different health conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, glaucoma, psoriasis and depression – along with early menopause in women.

Brian Williams breaks silence with apology: 'I said things that weren’t true'

Source: Guardian

After months of silence following revelations that he had peddled fabrications from the anchor chair of NBC Nightly News, Brian Williams on Thursday issued a statement that began: “I’m sorry.”

Williams’s statement was issued as the network announced he would not be returning to the helm of its nightly news program, where he once commanded 10 million viewers a night, more than any competitor. Williams’s fill-in, Lester Holt, will remain in the post, NBC said.

Williams moves to MSNBC, the network’s cable news outlet, where he will be “anchor of breaking news and special reports”, according to the NBC statement. He would also fill in for Holt, 56, “when Holt is not available”, the network said.

The news appeared to add a bumper stop to a spectacular skid by Williams, from the top position in broadcast news, as anchor of the most-watched nightly news program, to suspension and potential unemployment.

WARNING to Android users: Samsung security flaw

Every Samsung Galaxy device -- from the S3 to the latest S6 -- has a significant flaw that lets in hackers, researchers have discovered.

The vulnerability lives in the phones' keyboard software, which can't be deleted. The flaw potentially allows hackers to spy on anyone using a Samsung Galaxy phone.

You can be exposed by using public or insecure Wi-Fi. But some researchers think users are exposed even on cell phone networks.

Researchers at NowSecure, a cybersecurity firm, say they told Samsung (SSNLF) about the vulnerability in November. Seven months later, nothing has been fixed. That's why NowSecure made its findings public on Tuesday.

Fifa corruption: Swiss banks 'reported account suspicions'

Source: BBC

Swiss banks reported suspicious activity around accounts of football's world governing body Fifa, says the Swiss attorney general.

Michael Lauber said his office was analysing a "huge amount" of seized Fifa data in its corruption inquiry.

He said he did not rule out interviews with Fifa president Sepp Blatter as part of his investigation.

The inquiry surrounds possible criminal activity in the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Thank you DU

I just want to say how happy I am that this is a community that we don't have to fear personal attacks like you'll see like crazy on other sites. The jury system here seems to do a pretty good job keeping the over-the-line stuff from occurring. Thank you all and thank you for making my first week and a half here a positive experience.

North Korean soldier walks across border to defect, South says

Source: CNN

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)A North Korean soldier defected to South Korea on Monday across the heavily fortified border that separates the two countries, South Korean authorities said.

The soldier crossed the Military Demarcation Line on foot from the eastern North Korean province of Gangwon, said a South Korean Defense Ministry official, who declined to be identified.

Further details on the circumstances of the defection weren't immediately available.

The border between North and South Korea is considered to be the most heavily militarized in the world. The two countries technically remain at war, because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armed truce and not a peace treaty.
