Guatemalans march in protest of corruption, cost of living

Source: Associated Press

GUATEMALA CITY - Hundreds of Guatemalans set out from various points of the capital Thursday to protest alleged corruption by a deeply unpopular government, the high cost of living and attacks on freedom of expression.

Leaders of Guatemala's Indigenous population joined Thursday's march as well, warning that the rising cost of living in the country was harming the people.

Enrique Saquic, an Indigenous leader from Santa Lucia Utatlán, said "They are strangling us, our brothers, our people are those who are suffering all this high cost of living."

Daniel Pascual, leader of the Committee of Farmer Unity, said the cost of living "Means an increase in hunger for the poor."

Newhouse's primary success rare among GOP impeachment voters

U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump last year, and is one of only two to beat back GOP challengers this year.

Newhouse was the leading vote-getter in the race for his seat in the Aug. 2 Washington primary election, despite withering criticism from Trump and a Trump-backed challenger.

U.S. Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif. - who like Newhouse ran in a top-two open primary - also prevailed two months ago.

"The short answer is this: Newhouse benefitted from our Top 2 primary system, especially given there was a legitimate Democrat running," Todd Schaefer, a political science professor at Central Washington University, wrote in an e-mai

Trump hires prominent Atlanta attorney for election probe

Source: Associated Press

ATLANTA - Donald Trump has hired a prominent Atlanta criminal defense attorney known for defending famous rappers to represent him in matters related to the special grand jury that's investigating whether the former president illegally tried to interfere with the 2020 election in Georgia.

After Trump insulted basketball star LeBron James's intelligence in an August 2018 tweet, Findling called Trump the "Racist architect of fraudulent Trump University" in a tweet and ended the post with "POTUS pathetic once again!".

The Findling Law Firm said in a statement released Thursday that it has been hired, along with attorneys Jennifer Little and Dwight Thomas, to represent Trump.

"We are committed to fighting this misuse of the law and taxpayer resources. The team is confident that there have been no violations of Georgia law. The focus on President Trump may be newsworthy, but this investigation is wholly misdirected and politically driven," the statement says.

An OnlyFans model is accused of murder in her boyfriend

Source: NBC News

An OnlyFans model who fatally stabbed her boyfriend in Miami was arrested in Hawaii and is expected to be extradited on a charge of second-degree murder, authorities said.

Courtney Clenney, 26, was charged with second-degree murder with a deadly weapon for the April 3 stabbing of her boyfriend, Christian “Toby” Obumseli, State Attorney for Miami-Dade County Katherine Fernandez Rundle announced Thursday.

Rundle described the couple's relationship, which began in November 2020, as "extremely tempestuous and combative." She noted that the building management where Clenney and Obumseli lived documented multiple instances of loud arguments and was ready to evict the couple prior to the Obumseli's death

Man initially given life without parole in 2 murders freed

The Louisiana Board of Pardons and Parole voted 2-1 on Monday to release David Chenevert, who had agreed to the life sentence when he pleaded guilty in 1981 to stabbing Michael Brown and Evelyn McIntyre.

The son of a Baton Rouge police lieutenant, Chenevert cried as board member Sheryl Ranatza cast the deciding vote, with Pearl Wise voting in favor of his release and Bonnie Jackson opposing it, The Advocate reported.

Chenevert agreed to restrictions that include his leaving Louisiana and not returning without permission from a parole officer.

"You've done harm, you've healed yourself, and now you're healing others," Wise told Chenevert, who appeared at the meeting via a video conferencing web feed from the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.

Judy Poche, Brown's wife, said the reason she was able to move on after the killings was because prosecutors promised years ago that Chenevert would never walk free outside prison walls.

McIntyre's family has remained forcefully opposed to Chenevert's release.

In addition to leaving Louisiana, Chenevert will be required to complete 20 hours of community service every month and is barred from contacting the victims' families.

Alleged member of IS 'Beatles' charged in UK with terrorism

Source: Asssociated Press

LONDON (AP) — An alleged member of an Islamic State group cell nicknamed “The Beatles” that tortured and killed Western hostages was charged with terrorism offenses in Britain on Thursday after being deported from Turkey.

Aine Davis, 38, was arrested at Luton Airport north of London on Wednesday night after arriving on a flight from Turkey and charged with offenses under the Terrorism Act, the Metropolitan Police Service said.

During a court appearance on Thursday, Senior District Judge Paul Goldspring ordered Davis held in custody until his next court appearance on Sept. 2.

The militants dubbed “The Beatles” by their captives because of their British accents, held about two dozen Westerners a decade ago, when IS controlled a large swath of Syria and Iraq. Several of the captives were killed in gruesome beheadings that were broadcast online, including Americans James Foley and Steven Sotloff and Britons David Haines and Alan Hennin

2nd Australian state bans public displays of Nazi swastikas

Source: Associated Press

SYDNEY (AP) — A second Australian state on Thursday banned public displays of Nazi symbols.

New South Wales, the nation’s most populous state, followed Victoria, the second most populous, which banned the public display of Nazi swastikas in June.

The law was passed with the unanimous support of the state parliament’s upper chamber. The lower chamber passed the bill on Tuesday.

Queensland and Tasmania states have foreshadowed similar laws, which would mean half of Australia’s eight states and territories and most of the Australian population were banned from displaying Nazi symbols

Sentencing set for Napa naturopath who sold fake COVID-19 vaccine cards

A naturopathic doctor charged with selling fake COVID-19 immunization treatments and fraudulent vaccination cards will be sentenced in November after a California judge on Wednesday denied her motion to withdraw her plea agreement.

Juli A. Mazi, of Napa, pleaded guilty last April in federal court in San Francisco to one count of wire fraud and one count of false statements related to health care matters.

Mazi, who has since fired her attorneys and is now representing herself, sought to vacate her plea agreement while also filing a motion challenging the very laws that led to her prosecution.

“There were no laws broken,” Mazi read from her motion during a virtual hearing Wednesday. “Can you provide the laws that allow you to disregard the procedures that a naturopathic doctor is licensed to administer
