White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told a supportive crowd Friday morning that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh will "completely reshape the judiciary" once he's confirmed by the Senate.
Sanders spoke less than an hour before a key procedural vote in the Senate, after Kavanaugh faced decades-old sexual assault allegations.
"In hopefully just a few minutes we will see one of the more impactful things that [President Trump] will ever do, which is to completely reshape the judiciary," Sanders told a Women Vote Trump event at the Trump International Hotel near the White House.

Ron Wyden says Brett Kavanaugh appears to have lied in 2006 testimony
Source: Washington Examiner
Sen. Ron Wyden said Thursday that it appears Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh lied to Congress in 2006 when he testified about when he learned of a post-9/11 surveillance program.
The Oregon Democrat said in an emailed statement to the Washington Examiner that documents published by the New York Times appear to contradict Kavanaughs testimony.
Yes, the documents made public this week strongly suggest Brett Kavanaugh was involved in discussions about the Bush administrations illegal warrantless wiretapping programs, and that he misled the American people in his 2006 testimony, Wyden said.

John Bolton says Iran deal decision isn't prelude to US invasion
Source: Washington Examiner
National security adviser John Bolton said Tuesday that President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal isn't part of a broader plan to attack the country.
Bolton, a national security hawk considered by detractors to be too quick to support the use of military force, denied a plan to invade Iran following Trump's televised speech ending U.S. participation in the deal.
A reporter told Bolton there was speculation that the decision was a "precursor to the U.S. putting boots on the ground in Iran."

Ron Paul: Trump may be vulnerable to 2020 GOP primary challenge
Source: Washington Examiner
Former Texas Rep. Ron Paul says a yearlong economic boom under President Trump is a bit of an illusion and that debt, inflation, and inequality could cause turmoil that benefits a hardcore nucleus of libertarians.
The libertarian Republican leader told the Washington Examiner that Trump could face a strong challenger in the 2020 GOP primary, especially if things are really much worse."
The big opening for us is the fact that this system is coming apart. Were on the verge of something like what happened in 89 when the Soviet system just collapsed, he said. Im just hoping our system comes apart as gracefully as the Soviet system.

Legal pot in 100 days? New Jersey's next governor aims for national first
Source: Washington Examiner
New Jersey Gov.-elect Phil Murphy said he would legalize marijuana within 100 days of taking office in January, and his Tuesday win makes a Democrat-packed statehouse the only obstacle.
Supporters feel confident it will happen, but legalization foes plan to campaign for Democratic defections as the other side debates different visions for reform.

Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher, Andy Harris say they will give away Paul Manafort donations if...
Source: Washington Examiner
Two Republicans in Congress say they will return donations from former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, but only if he is convicted of charges announced Monday by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible Trump election links to Russia.
Manafort and business partner Rick Gates were hit with a 12-count indictment alleging money laundering and other crimes related to their work for pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine before their association with Trumps campaign.
Just two current members of the House of Representatives Reps. Andy Harris, R-Md., and Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif. and one current senator Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. received money from Manafort in the past decade, according to the OpenSecrets database of contribution filings.

Few heeded Trump's call to challenge TV licenses
Source: Washington Examiner
President Trump said last week that broadcast TV licenses "must be challenged and, if appropriate, revoked" in response to "partisan, distorted and fake" news coverage. But few people seem to have taken him seriously, even though complaints against broadcasters are easy to file.
Publicly available data from the Federal Communications Commission show there wasn't a significant bump in consumer complaints against TV stations after a pair of Trump tweets Thursday, despite the fact that complaints are made using a simple online form or phone call.

Putin spokesman: US has 'serious problems' with press freedom as Justice Department probes Russia
Source: Washington Examiner
A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin says inquiries by the Justice Department into Russia-funded news outlets show that U.S. press freedom is in decline.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to a reported investigation into the Sputnik news outlet. A fired White House correspondent says he gave the FBI thousands of internal emails showing it's illegally operating as an unregistered propagandist.

Trump nominates 'backdoor search' defender to lead privacy board
Source: Washington Examiner
President Trump is moving to revive the watchdog agency that oversees major surveillance programs, but some privacy advocates see his pick to lead it as overly deferential to the intelligence community.
Adam Klein, nominated Friday to serve as chairman of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, has taken sides in one of the biggest policy debates this year: whether authorities need a warrant to search American communications collected "incidentally" under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expires later this year unless Congress acts.

Antiwar activists seek boost from Trump's Afghanistan announcement
Peace movement leaders are debating the future of antiwar activism if President Trump announces Monday evening that he is sending more U.S. troops to the nearly 16-year-old war in Afghanistan.
When President Barack Obama bombed Syria, about two dozen mostly gray-haired activists protested at the White House. It was a good turnout for an antiwar effort that shriveled during the Nobel Peace Prize winner's two terms.
Some longtime activists doubt the return of a mass movement, saying Afghanistan rarely attracts much public interest. But other organizers foresee anti-war advocacy rising alongside and within an energized anti-Trump movement that regularly draws a crowd.
