Biden to honor 12 people with Presidential Citizens Medal on 2-year anniversary of 1/6 insurrection

CNN

President Joe Biden on Friday plans to mark the two-year anniversary of the January 6, 2021, insurrection by awarding for the first time in his presidency the Presidential Citizens Medal to 12 people.

The individuals include law enforcement officers who were injured defending the Capitol, a Capitol Police officer who died the day after rioters stormed the building and election workers who rejected efforts by former President Donald Trump to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Biden is set to deliver remarks and host a ceremony at the White House honoring the dozen individuals chosen for having made “exemplary contributions to our democracy” and shown “courage and selflessness” around the events of January 6, a White House official familiar with the details told CNN.

Trump's endorsement of McCarthy had no effect on votes.

Looks like Trump's intervention this morning has shaken absolutely no votes loose.

Kevin McCarthy Suffers Defeat in Fourth Round

After a fourth round of voting, the House of Representatives failed once again to elect a speaker.

The vote totals for the fourth round:

Hakeem Jeffries – 212
Kevin McCarthy – 201
Byron Donalds – 20
Other – 0
Present – 1

Despite a long evening and morning of negotiations with Republicans, McCarthy was unable to move a single vote in his favor. In fact, with Rep. Victoria Sparks voting “present” McCarthy actually lost one vote.

It’s also worth noting that Trump’s endorsement of McCarthy had no effect on votes.

The GOP leadership is also unable to pass an adjournment resolution.

Politico reports.

Said Biden: “With regards to the fight over the Speaker… that’s not my problem. I just think it’s a little embarrassing that it’s taking so long.”

more signs that trump is losing his mojo

from something called Puck via the Bulwark (paywalled?), more signs that trump is losing his mojo

This detail from Palmeri’s report is fascinating.

I’m told from sources close to him that he’s been burning up the phone for McCarthy, but his pleas don’t seem to be making any impact. Even Trump loyalist Matt Gaetz hasn’t been moved. Instead, I’m told, the recipients of Trump’s calls have rebutted his request to support Kevin with relentless flirtation and flattery, Trump’s ultimate love language, such as suggesting that he should be speaker. Naturally, this deactivated and neutralized the ’24 presidential candidate.

Washington Times reporter Mica Soellner tweets:

hearing this AM that the GOP’s intended meeting today before the House reconvenes today at noon has been CANCELED – never a great sign to start.

Imagine if NYT had been reporting that Matt Gaetz & Jim Jordan were willing to burn our country down

Imagine if that had been the unrelenting message since Jan6?

The paralysis underscored the dilemma facing House Republicans: No matter the concessions made to some of those on the far right, they simply will not relent and join their colleagues even if it is for the greater good of their party, and perhaps the nation. They consider themselves conservative purists who cannot be placated unless all their demands are met — and maybe not even then. Their agenda is mostly to defund, disrupt and dismantle government, not to participate in it.

Representative Jim Jordan, the Ohio Republican and hard-right alternative for speaker favored by some conservatives, conceded that the legislative outlook was limited at best, considering that bills favored by House Republicans were unlikely to pass in the Democratic Senate or to be signed by President Biden.

“So be it,” said Mr. Jordan in nominating Mr. McCarthy. “They have to answer to the people in 2024.”

He also alluded to what was likely to be an epic struggle to keep the government running and stave off a disastrous debt default with Republicans in charge of the House, saying that their principal task was to ensure that Congress never again passed the kind of sprawling spending bill enacted last month.
