He might have watched too many James Bond and other action films...or maybe he played video games where people can jump from absurd heights and not die.
I wouldn't assume he was in a rational frame of mind at the time he took that action, and I would not be surprised if his intent was escape, not death. He might have even thought they were on the 2nd floor, not the 3rd.
And "slow insanity?" He could use the time to take some college courses and improve himself--with good behavior he might have cut his stretch in half.

Trying to escape and died trying. Because the sentence doesn't fit suicide IMO but who knows
