Beef or mutton? Mystery over India lynching lab results

Source: BBC

Last year, a Muslim man in northern India was killed in a mob lynching over allegations that his family had been storing and consuming beef at home. The case sparked widespread outrage and a furious debate about religious tolerance. Now, there's a fresh twist in the case that has raised questions over the investigation - and highlighted tensions over beef in India.

Mohammed Akhlaq was beaten to a death in the district of Dadri in September over rumours he had consumed beef.

Hindus consider cows to be sacred, and for many, eating beef is taboo. The slaughter of cows is also banned in many Indian states.
...
Later, it was also revealed that the meat was never in his house, but found inside a bin near his home.

Prime Minister responds to Sheikh Shady Al-Suleiman’s controversial invitation to Kirriitle

Source: news.com.au

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull has admitted he did not know about hateful comments made by a controversial Islamic preacher until he was dining with him.

Mr Turnbull had dinner with Sheikh Shady Al-Suleiman, the national president of the Australian National Imams Council, at Kirribilli House on Thursday night.

The sheikh was among a group of religious leaders and prominent Islamic Australians to attend the Iftar dinner to mark the holy month of Ramadan and promote cross-cultural relations.

The Australian-born Sheikh Shady has previously said AIDS “is a divine punishment” for homosexuals and adulterers should be stoned to death.

The Australian-born Sheikh Shady {president of the National Imams Council } has previously said AIDS “is a divine punishment” for homosexuals and adulterers should be stoned to death.

Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull: “(His comments) were drawn to my attention during the dinner,” he told Mitchell. “My staff alerted me to that after The Australian newspaper had contacted them.”
Maybe its time hire staff with a basic level of competency?

Mr Turnbull said he knew about the sheikh’s comments on homosexuals but was unaware “until now” of his stance on adultery

What? So his comments on homosexuals was OK. But the Adultery stance was unacceptable? WTF? Is this political amateur hour?

Mr Turnbull: Mitchell asked the PM if the sheikh’s comments were reflective of wider problems with Islam. The prime minister said he did not believe that was the case.

“I don’t want to buy into a theological debate,” he said. “It would be a great pity if the invitation of this individual overshadowed and undermined the importance of engagement with Muslim Australians.

Inviting someone to dine with the highest political official in a country gives them your support. Support which gives them much, much more credibility.

French police arrest Islamic extremist alleged to have been plotting attack on tourists in Carcasonn

Source: news.com.au

A RADICALISED convert to Islam has been arrested in France for allegedly planning to attack American and Russian tourists at a popular medieval site.

News of the arrest came as the country reeled from yet another terror attack, after an extremist pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group killed a policeman and his partner at their home in the Paris suburb of Magnanville on Monday.

A judicial source said the 22-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday night in southern Carcassonne where he had gone to carry out “a violent act, in particular targeting Americans and Russians”.

He had in his possession “a knife and a small mallet”, the source said. The suspect comes from the southern French town of Lunel - notorious for the number of residents who have left to wage jihad in Syria - but had been living in the nearby Tarn region.

Australians on the east coast are suddenly becoming deathly allergic to red meat

Source: news.com.au

...
None mentioned that a severe local reaction to a tick was a risk factor for developing mammalian meat allergy (MMA), an emerging allergy where the tick’s saliva changes a person’s immune system to start reacting to the meat of mammals — beef, pork, lamb and sometimes even dairy and gelatine.
...
Clinical Associate Professor Sheryl van Nunen discovered the link between anaphylaxis to mammalian meat and Australian paralysis tick bite in 2007. Back then it was a relatively rare occurrence but fast forward nearly 10 years and she diagnoses a new case of MMA daily at her Chatswood rooms.

It’s estimated there are well over 1000 cases on Sydney’s northern beaches alone. Numbers are so high on the north shore that a diagnosis of MMA in adults, commonly anaphylaxis, is as prevalent as the commonest food allergy in adults, peanut allergy.
...
Unlike traditional food allergies MMA has a delayed reaction of anywhere between two and 10 hours. Most reactions happen between four to six hours after ingestion. Allergic symptoms vary, from hives, to gastrointestinal pain and anaphylaxis.

Interesting way to safely remove tic without transmitting the alpha-gal:

Meanwhile, prevention is the best cure. Dr van Nunen advises using an ether-containing spray such as Wart-Off to freeze and kill the tick in situ and letting it drop off rather than pull it out.

I wonder how long before this disease hits here.

Migrant crisis: EU plans penalties for refusing asylum seekers [$290,000/person]

Source: BBC

The European Commission has proposed reforms to EU asylum rules that would see stiff financial penalties imposed on countries refusing to take their share of asylum seekers.

The bloc's executive body is planning a sanction of €250,000 (£200,000; $290,000) per person.

The Commission wants changes made to an asylum system which has buckled amid an influx of migrants.

The plans would require support from most member states as well as MEPs.

That is equivalent to 66yrs wages for the average Syrian (based on the ILO stat of $364avg monthly wage).
Hmmmm, could there be a cheaper way? Or should we just threaten them to send us $290,000 for each of our unemployed or we will send them there?

Obstacles to 'coding while black'

Source: BBC

Rodney Sampson helps run Codestart, a 13-month program designed to teach young people from low-income backgrounds or communities about coding, finance and finding jobs.
...
As part of the programme, each student is provided with a living expense. When one of his students, who did not have a bank account, attempted to cash his cheque in a branch of the Atlanta Check Cashing Company, he was accused of attempting to submit a false or stolen money order. Police were called, and the student was threatened with arrest.
...
"Thank you for sharing this story. So glad the student had a network of mentors…but so many do not. This must end."
...
"Rather than complain about it, we've said let's solve this," Sampson said. The class is now focused on technologies or businesses that can help report on police altercations, and they have been receiving proposals for internships and jobs for the students.

NASA study shows worst drought in 900 years may be behind Middle East upheaval

Source: News Corp Australia Network

THE incredibly complex chaos of Islamic State and the upheavals of Syria and Iraq may have a very simple cause: The region’s worst drought in 900 years.

A NASA study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres shows the Middle East is in the grip of a mega-drought that began in 1998. It has taken hold in Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey.

The water shortage has been taking a steadily increasing toll on farmers and the region’s ecology, with crop failures, dust storms and record-breaking heat now an annual event.

...

“The range of how extreme wet or dry periods were is quite broad, but the recent drought in the Levant region stands out as about 50 per cent drier than the driest period in the past 500 years, and 10 to 20 per cent drier than the worst drought of the past 900 years,” a NASA statement reads.
