Somehow, Mitt Romney fails to see what his friends, his supporters and his enemies clearly understand. He needs to release his tax returns, and not merely a summary for a year or two.
President Barack Obama is pummeling Romney over the issue, and Romney seems flummoxed, unable to focus the campaign back to where it ought to be on fundamental issues involving war, the shaky economy, and the candidates' vision for the future.
Just as all presidential candidates must visit the Iowa state fair and stop by New Hampshire diners in the dead of winter, Romney must have known he would be expected to release tax returns before becoming leader of the free world.
Romney says Obama's opposition researchers would pick through details of his tax returns to try to embarrass him. Welcome to the national stage.

(50,326 posts)Romney's insistence on NOT releasing his returns is the only thing he has been consistent on, the ONLY thing. That speaks volumes, imo.

(881 posts)Must be fairly damning considering all the critism he's willing to endure for not releasing them. Even members of his own party are calling for their release.

(546 posts)- Not releasing the returns has already answered the question. The absence of evidence is a positive indication that evidence is absent.
- We already know where Mr. Romney's investments are: either here, there or somewhere else. Any further information would simply be redundant.
- Mr. Romney will release his returns sooner or later, but not any sooner than that.
- You can't have a return without a departure. Focusing on only one aspect of the issue would lead to misinterpretation.
- If Mr. Romney made a mistake, he would recognize that an error had been made and not make it.
