(6,399 posts)That looks bad to me...even for the NE.
Were freezing in NC. Temps in teens predicted tonight.

(6,399 posts)it's practically whiteout conditions out there. Which is not a normal storm condition in this area. Briefly, sure, but sustained as long as it has been? It's the power of nature.

(7,866 posts)Does much snow get in there?
Are the subways heated?
The snow that gets in there, does it melt relatively quickly, or does it accumulate?
This is interesting

(51,590 posts)Some subways are several stories underground...layers of tunnels. They flooded in NYC during Sandy since the high tides nailed lower Manhattan and the salt water from the rivers destroyed a lot in the system. It was costly and took a long time to repair.

(31,261 posts)Some subways have heating, but being underground helps a lot. If you go to a city that has subways, take a ride on one, locals are helpful, they will tell you how to get back to your starting point if you ask on the subway platform.

(43,049 posts)but I seem to remember the F train is above ground in parts of Brooklyn, so if Bergen St is anywhere near one of those openings it could blown down the tunnel.

(23,314 posts)I'm in Montana so we don't get too worked up over snow storms but we had a blizzard with high winds last week that got our attention. 5 huge trees in my neighborhood fell on homes and over main roads. Storms like this one in NYC will be crippling. Stay in side folks!

(26,060 posts)Park in the 30s to grand central (around 10 blocks). Subway stairs not shoveled and came close to falling down them. Then a 45 minute ride to Westchester followed by about a 3 block walk home. Snow up to my knees with blowing snow right in my face. Took a hot shower and now cuddling with the kitties.

(24,396 posts)I dont miss the weather.
The worst is when the snow starts to melt and the rivers of icy water lap up against every street crossing in Manhattan. It is fun to watch the people wearing dress shoes with no rubbers or boots trying to jump over the waters. They usually end up in 6-inches of water with their pant legs dripping wet, their feet frozen and their briefcase sitting a few yards away in a snowdrift.
