Sears Holdings, the parent company of Sears and Kmart stores, told its employees Thursday it will close more than 100 additional stores.
That consists of 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores, all of which are expected to close between early March and April.
"We will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members," the company said in a statement.
Sears wouldn't say how many of its employees will be affected but did say most of the jobs are part-time positions and eligible associates will receive severance.

(38,958 posts)It appears that 2018 will likely be even worse for store closings than 2017 has already been. The shakeout in the Retail Sector caused by a variety of factors (well beyond Amazon's appearance on the scene) will be very dramatic.

(41,132 posts)With the 2017 holiday season behind it, two of America's biggest department store chains, Macy's and Sears Holdings, unveiled which locations they will be closing next adding up to more than 100.
To start the year and building on previous announcements, Sears will be closing 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores, all of which are expected to shut between early March and April.
Macy's has revealed 11 locations (as part of a previously announced plan to close 100 stores, beginning in 2017) that will also shut in early 2018, with liquidation sales beginning as soon as next week.
Meanwhile, the industry is closely watching which Sears and Macy's stores are going dark, as it could be a death sentence for a mall to lose both anchor tenants. The scenario isn't uncommon, either.
