"Donald Trump is the Greatest Danger the World Faces" (Irish Central)

With all this talk about Trump's initial lawyer and mentor, the notorious and disgraced Roy Cohn of the McCarthy Era in America, here is a recent article from Ireland that really sums up the danger we all face.

<snip>How did it come to this? A self-absorbed president denying climate change, threatening nuclear war, striking fear everywhere one year after his election.

As I look across the seas from Ireland I see a lady standing at the entrance to New York with tears streaming down her eyes. In her hand she carries a torch whose flames are flickering out. As her tears fall to the ground they are obliterating words at the base of her statue which read: “give me your poor, your huddled masses”.

Irish McCarthyite era blame?

How did it come to this? In a sense the Irish could be asked to share part of the blame. For one of the worst episodes in 20th century American history was the McCarthyite era, a blot on the generally proud evolution of the Irish contribution to American history.

McCarthy – lying, hectoring drunk that he was – brought Hitler’s theory of the Big Lie to new heights. The government was infiltrated by communists, Hollywood was infiltrated by communists and he set out to prove his contention with blustering scaremongering tactics that besmirched America’s reputation for democracy.

Genius of Roy Cohn

But under the tutelage of an evil genius called Roy Cohn he acquired an army of believers and did untold damage to careers before he was disgraced and overthrown. Cohn was a master of the black arts of smear and lie. As a prosecutor in the Rosenberg espionage trials he persuaded David Greenglass to lie about his sister Ethel and so caused her execution.

His tactic was to attack, attack and then attack some more. Moving on to the next shibboleth before the last one caught up with him and always keeping his name in the papers.<snip>

A. They are culpable, or B. They put their party over democracy and the long term good of America.

The following are quotes from the book "Dark Money," by Jane Mayer. The quotes cover two separate instances in the method of libertarian, trumpian, and conservative attacks.

"The man who put his mark on the Olin foundation...was its executive director,Mark Joyce...Joyce was a true radical, inspired by Antonio Gramsci...he wanted to effect radical transformation. 'My style (Joyce said) was the style of the toddler and the adolescent: fight, fight, fight, rest, get up, fight, fight, fight. No one ever accused me of being pleasant. I made a difference. It was acknowledged by friend and foe.' " (page 125)

"In looking back many years later, O'Connell said she regarded the Kochs as dangerous, and still felt uncomfortable talking about them...she recalled, they tried to attack my reputation (while working as an attorney on a case against them brought by the EPA)...they lie about everything, and they get away with it because they're a private company. They obstructed every step of discovery. It was always, 'I didn't do it, it's not our oil, it's not our pipes.' You can't believe anything they say. They definitely don't play the game the way other companies do." (page 155)
