I'm not watching the game, just started seeing all these comments on Twitter, reactions to Trump apparently NOT knowing the anthem.
Editing to add a tweet with video of the complete anthem from NBC News. It's very obvious that Trump doesn't know all the words:

(51,590 posts)Malaria had to nudge him to remember to put his hand over his heart during ceremonies. In 6 months he may not even recognize his own kids.
For all his bluster about NFL players kneeling during the anthem you would think this ass clown would know the National Anthem start to finish. Why was he even on the field.

I'll give the young men who escorted him out credit. They did a wonderful job of respect
I could not have done it. Would have turnt my stomach.

(6,679 posts)The 2 men next to him... it was all they could do to stop themselves from turning around and tell him to act right.
The older man.... you can just see "what the actual fuck?" in his eyes.

Also, in both of them at the end he has this weird expression, like he is REALLY proud of himself

(48,975 posts)knowing the words would be a minimum for someone who wants to see pro athletes fired if they take a knee during the anthem.

(15,286 posts)A few years ago at a local high school basketball game, the young man who was singing the anthem forgot the words right in the middle. Instead of remaining silent and lettlng the singer struggle, the entire crowd, most of whom had been just listening until then, joined in with the words and sang along with him until he finished.

(146,306 posts)I just sing that last stanza an octave down. And it's often in the wrong key for me. I'm a bass/baritone. I can even sing the whole thing an octave down in some keys, and do, if that's the case.

(5,611 posts)I actually quite like our anthem (La Marseillaise is my favorite), and if our kids were still learning music in school with just a bit of voice training and practice (our anthem was meant to be belted out in bars by regular citizens etc after all not performed by coloratura sopranos) it wouldnt be challenging to most of our citizens. Its tragic that music is no longer considered important (thanks repub cuts) even though its well known that musical training is fantastic for young minds. Of course Trump never learned the words.

(1,202 posts)All those excerpts from the book suddlendy remembered: Trump would get bored and walk out of meetings while they were still in progress. I think it took all of his will power not to walk away in the middle of the anthem. He seem *that* antsy.

(5,126 posts)Idk if it is a condition he has been able to mask for years and is being exacerbated by the pressure of POTUS or if he is truly in a mental decline... but he isn't right. I mean, we all knew his level of knowledge and competence was well beneath that of a person that should be elevated to even a Presidential candidate, let alone POtUS.... but he really seems to be falling apart.

(32,003 posts)I doubt 1 in 100 or even 1 in 1000 on this site know all the words. I know I don't. So what? Of all the things to attack Trump for this is the least. I have been to countless professional sports games where the anthem is played and everyone follows the lyrics that are presented on video screens. If that is a crime I plead guilty!

(6,679 posts)I could not find the right note if it bit me on the toe. Rosanne Barr did a better rendition than I can muster.
But I know the words to all the verses and can mouth along. I don't expect that of all my fellow citizens. Expecting as much of my President is not asking too much.
CreekDog
(46,192 posts)former9thward has to answer by saying:
1)others don't know the same thing
2)Democrats don't know the same thing
3)it's not a bad thing if the Republicans or Trump did the same thing
To make sure the Republicans or Trump doesn't look as bad as folks are saying.
Rinse, lather repeat.
Now if someone says something bad about Democrats, then he has to take a different approach.
To make sure the Democrats don't look good as folks are saying.
Once you recognize the pattern it's fun to spot, it's like bird watching or cloud identification.

(32,003 posts)But can you post videos of previous Presidents knowing all the words?
KentuckyWoman
(6,679 posts)Why do you need "previous presidents". That doesn't have anything to do with this one.
If you are going to support a president on a board that clearly does not, at least get your logic in order.
former9thward
(32,003 posts)But I won't fall for it. It was you who said Presidents should know the anthem. I thought that was curious and wondering if any other president knew the words.

(25,316 posts)I have always used, "our" instead of "the" in front of twilight.
I only know the first verse. I've never been in sports. I don't watch sports. I have only been two 2 professional sports events in my entire life, one was in 1978 and another was in the 1990s.
I hear it at occasional Democratic events, but don't pay attention to the words. I watched Beyonce lip sync it an Obama's second inauguration. I believe that is the last time that I actually "watched" it sung.
I learned it in school over 50 years ago.
If I know these lyrics this well, I'm sure that more than 1/100 on this site know the lyrics better than me.
O say can you see
By the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed
At our twilight's last gleaning
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
Through the perilous strife
O'r the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming
And the rockets red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
That are flag was still there
O say does that star spangle banner yet wave
O'r the land of the free
And the home of the brave

(37,748 posts)"Most people don't..."
Is yours merely another little guess, or do you have objective evidence to support your premise?
"Of all the things to attack Trump for..."
You confuse mocking and attacking, they are in fact, two wholly separate constructs, regardless of any pleas you make.

Remember when an apparently stewed E swayed back and forth and swung his arms (and Laura's and Michelle's) during "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" at a funeral? That's what this reminds me of.
I have ADHD, and my mother always called me a wiggle worm because I couldn't hold still. But as a grown-up I can control the wiggling and fidgeting when I need to. Obviously this 71-year-old man cannot.

Which makes me think that the fact he doesnt know the words now means he never knew them. This is longterm memory info and even with dementia he should have retained this info.
